This from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:
The Gary Fire Department operated this 1977 International / Ward LaFrance pumper. It carried WLF serial # 73-1124, had a 750 GPM pump and a 1000 Gallon tank. It was assigned to Engine Co. 9 , and then to Eng.Co.11.

To my best recollection the story has it the International chassis was meant to be used for a garbage truck. It was delivered in bright orange which was the livery of the garbage trucks at the time. The FD needed an engine and it was sent to WLF and supposedly returned with an orange cab and red body. It was painted red in the FD shops.

Sharp enough looking rig for having a commercial chassis.
I remember seeing many IH chassis like this near the long defunct CENTRAL ENGINEERING plant in Milwaukee.
They built street sweepers and sewer vacuum cleaners often on that chassis.
Memories indeed.

Ugh, that doesn’t look like fun getting in and out of on a busy shift. Thanks Wayne.
