Fire departments share resources

The TribLocal has an article about the Winnetka Fire Department and the Northfield Fire Department entering into an agreement to share fire inspectors.

Winnetka’s two-person fire prevention bureau will begin providing fire inspections for the village of Northfield under an agreement between the two municipalities. Northfield officials approached Winnetka about providing services on a contractual basis after the village’s longtime, part-time employee recently retired.

At a quick glance it seemed to be a good fit,” said Winnetka Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky. “They had the same codes as us. They had pretty much the same ordinances. And of course their proximity is really close.”

Berkowsky said the agreement builds on an effort to save money by sharing services with nearby communities. Winnetka and Northfield already share fire and emergency medical dispatch with a number of other communities.

Berkowsky said Northfield is getting a “trusted, competent fire prevention bureau at a reasonable cost,” while Winnetka is getting a new revenue source.

The total annual fee to Winnetka will be $21,238, officials said.

Winnetka currently has two-part time inspectors, but one recently retired from the Glenview Fire Department, which will give him more time to devote to fire prevention, Berkowsky said. The work in Northfield is expected take up about 30 percent of the inspectors’ time, according to village documents.

The services include annual inspections of 143 structures in Northfield, responding to fire prevention related inquiries, witnessing system tests, attending special events and coordinating plan reviews.

Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Winnetka Fire Department was called to a house with smoke coming from the attic at 924 Pine Tree Lane just after 9PM on Wednesday evening. Prior to the fire department’s arrival, police units confirmed smoke from a house at the corrected address of 910 Pine Tree Lane.

The first engine turned down the street and was completely immersed in smoke with near zero visibility. They pulled past the house and the truck was able to back up to the driveway. Heavy smoke at the scene was the updated size up at a split level house that was being renovated. Companies attempted an interior attack as fire burned through the roof at the rear of the house. Northfield Truck 29 reported seeing heavy fire as they rounded the corner two blocks away.

The interior attack was abandoned shortly thereafter as the fire spread throughout the attic space. Fortunately the interior crews spotted a hole in the first floor before it could cause injury to any firefighters.

The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm as an elevated master stream was put into operation from Winnetka Truck 28 in addition to multiple hand lines. As the fire progressed, Northfield Truck 29 also put an elevated master stream into service. The house backed up to Tower Road, and trucks from both Glenview and Skokie setup there but did not deploy master streams. Both ladders were put over the scene to provide illumination for firefighters.

Companies at the scene included engines from Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Northbrook, Highwood, and Evanston. Trucks on-scene were from Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Skokie. Other units included a squad from Morton Grove, an ambulance from Wilmette, the MESS Canteen, and multiple chief officers.

2-Alarm commercial fire in Evanston, 12-29-13 (final)

One parting post on last weeks commercial fire in Evanston, some interesting apparatus shots from Steve Redick.

  • Perhaps someone can comment on this, but the webmaster can’t remember another time (certainly in recent years) that all five Evanston engines were pumping at the same fire
  • Steve has the first shot we’ve seen of the Glenview/Northfield Truck 14/29 in service and labeled as Truck 29
  • Wilmette and Winnetka engines were also pumping at the scene, though Steve tells us that they were each substituted for Evanston engines that required fuel
  • an interesting note, with the inclusion of the Wilmette and Winnetka engines, this fire utilized Engines 21, 22, 23, 24 25, 26, & 28 … almost a complete sequence of numerical units …

Northbrook house fire 6-30-13

Sunday evening at roughly 9:15PM, the Northbrook Fire Department received a call reporting fire in the home at 1337 Walters Avenue. As units went en-route, the police reported a working fire at the scene, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire) before the first fire company arrived. In addition to units from Northbrook, Glencoe responded with an engine, Northfield with a truck, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52.

Fire was in a second floor bedroom and communicated into the attic before venting through the roof. A Box Alarm was requested for additional companies to cover the three Northbrook stations. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene. The fire was contained within 25 minutes. The residents, who were home when the fire broke out, all evacuated safely.

Several images of the apparatus were submitted by Larry, and we expect to see shots showing the fire from Tim, since he arrived right behind the Northbrook companies.
