CFD MVA with extrication, 5/7/16

This from Steve Redick:

I took in a pin in accident Saturday morning (5/7/16)  on the EB JFK@Sayre. Tragically the outcome of this was one fatality. I was able to get some good images of much of the extrication and the overall scene with apparatus placement. I have never really seen the battery operated spreaders and tools in operation before. It seems like they used two sets of the spreaders and a sawzall. Despite this being a tragic incident I feel that the training potential of some of these images is worth sharing.

This from Larry Shapiro:

Buffalo Grove firefighters were called to McHenry Road and the entrance to The Grove shopping center, north of Lake-Cook Road late this morning (6/7/15) for a two-car crash with one car on it’s side. Battalion 4 arrived and reported that two SUVs were involved with one partially hanging over an embankment into a drainage culvert. The two occupants of the car in the street refused treatment and the other two were entrapped and needed to be extricated.

The car was stabilized with rescue jacks and tied off to the quint while tools were put to work on both sides of the vehicle.

Here are a few shots from the scene. I’ll have more tomorrow along with a video.

MVA with entrapment near Long Grove, 3-18-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Long Grove FPD units with mutual aid companies from Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, and Arlington Heights were dispatched to a tractor-trailer rollover with possible entrapment on the NB I-53 offramp to EB Lake Cook Road around 2:40 this afternoon (3/18/15). Buffalo Grover Tower 25 was the first unit on-scene and confirmed that two occupants were trapped inside the truck that was on it’s roof. He requested a 2nd ambulance and a heavy-wrecker with airbags to assist with the rescue.

Two separate extrications were going … with Long Grove working to free the passenger while Buffalo Grove and Prospect Heights attended to the driver. There was talk of requesting a helicopter due to what was anticipated to be a prolonged extrication, but there was no need.  The passenger was freed first and the driver shortly thereafter. Arlington Heights Ambulance 4 and Long Grove Ambulance 55 transported to Lutheran General and Condell respectively.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51 was requested as a third squad but was released as they arrived on the scene.

Here are a few images from the scene with a full gallery at shapirophotography.net. I will also have a video of the extrication, plus images and video of the recovery by Hillside Towing.

Fatal crash in Arlington Heights, 3-10-14 (update)

Sad news reported by the Daily Herald, a second person has died as a result of injuries sustained at the multi-vehilce crash in Arlington Heights March 10th.

A second man has died from his injuries after a crash caused by a wrong-way driver in Arlington Heights on Monday. Anatoliy Elkind, 48, of Vernon Hills died at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday, said Arlington Heights Police Capt. Andrew Whowell. Elkind was critically injured in the five-car crash on Rand Road near Thomas on Monday afternoon. He was being treated in the ICU at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Police say the crash was caused by Stanley Ksiazek, 51, of Palatine, who was speeding in the wrong lanes of traffic. Ksiazek’s red pickup truck hit four cars before leaving the roadway and flipping over. Ksiazek died from his injuries Monday.

Two other people were hospitalized in the crash with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police have said they do not suspect alcohol was involved in the crash. Whowell said police reached that conclusion because there was no strong odor of alcohol when Ksiazek was extricated from his vehicle or when he was treated at the hospital. But a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office said toxicology tests are being done to test for both alcohol and drugs in Ksiazek’s system. Results of toxicology tests can take three or four weeks.

thanks Dan

Fatal crash in Arlington Heights, 3-10-14

Several 9-1-1 calls were received by Northwest Central Dispatch about a rollover accident in the 1600 block of N. Rand Road in Arlington Heights shortly after noon today (Monday). As the incident is on the border of the Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights districts, both departments responded with full assignments after it was determined that there were multiple patients and multiple entrapments.

Five vehicles were involved and the drivers of two required extrication, one of which was handled by Arlington Heights companies and the other by Prospect Heights units. Only one of the four Arlington Heights ambulances was available at the time of the incident. Additional ambulances came from Prospect Heights, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Des Plaines.

One of the drivers did not survive.

Fatal wreck in Chicago, 12-24-13

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a one-car crash on Christmas eve that claimed the life of an 8 year old girl and left her 26 year old father in critical condition.

Eight-year-old Lauren Jessica Smith recently confronted her mother after finding receipts for gifts she had asked from Santa Claus.  The 3rd grader was looking forward to opening the presents, especially a karaoke machine, as she returned from a Christmas Eve family dinner in the south suburbs. She was riding with her father, headed for her grandmother’s house, when their car struck a curb and crashed into a tree in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to police and relatives.

The car came to rest on the passenger side on the grassy median, authorities said.  Lauren was found dead inside the car and her father, 26, was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Thursday morning, he still had not been told about the death of his only daughter, according to the girl’s mother, Loressa Hall.

Hall said her daughter, whom she called “Baby,” and her father were driving from an aunt’s home in Sauk Village Christmas Eve. He had stopped at his home near 56th and Wolcott Avenue to pick up presents and was then planning to drop off his daughter at Hall’s mother’s home, where Hall and her daughter were to wake up Christmas day.

Firefighters spent about 40 minutes working to free the father, then they continued to search the crushed car and found the young girl trapped inside, officials said.  Firefighters freed Lauren in 20 minutes, but their efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

Tim Olk was at the scene and submitted several images from the extrication.
