Lombard firefighters receive award

Excerpts from The VillageofLombard.org:

Lombard Firefighters Receive Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Run of the Year Award

On September 23, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital presented the Run of the Year award to Lombard Firefighter Paramedics; Lt. Frank Gallione, Tim Hogan, and Adam Kruckenberg, for their professional efforts in saving the life of a college student.

Elmhurst firefighters responded to an early morning fire call in February of 2015, and requested a change of quarters for Lombard firefighters, requiring them to cover Elmhurst’s Fire Station 2. At 4:30 a.m., Lombard firefighters responded to the call of an unconscious person found outside in frigid temperatures at an Elmhurst residence.

The victim, a 20-year old male college student, was exposed to -10°F temperatures with a wind chill of -25°F for an extended period of time and was found frozen to a driveway. The 9-1-1 call was made by a homeowner who  discovered the victim after going outside to warm up his car. Lombard firefighters were able to remove the individual from the surface of the driveway and provided aid which include administering warm intravenous fluids to help increase the body temperature. The victim suffered hypothermia and frostbite spending two days in intensive care before making a full recovery.

The rescue was a involved mutual-aid from surrounding communities and included paramedic assistance and transportation to the hospital in an Oakbrook Terrace FPD ambulance.

Lombard firefighters receive award

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

Everything happened so fast for Joanna Koppang that she wasn’t able to properly thank the six Lombard firefighters who safely delivered her daughter in an ambulance across from the Lombard Metra station in January, but the Wheaton resident got her chance to do just that on June 18, when she presented the men with a Stork Award.

Koppang and her family awarded the men with the pink stork pin at a Lombard Village Board meeting June 18. Recipients included firefighters Tim Hillesheim, John Studnicka, Dale Farris, Joe Kaforski, Galen Cardott and Lt. Tony Sally.

This was the first time Studnicka delivered a baby, but he said he wasn’t nervous. “Everyone felt comfortable doing it because we have training on labor and birth at least once a year,” he said. “Everything went well; the baby was healthy. So we couldn’t ask for anything different.”

Koppang was at her job in Chicago on Jan. 7 when she started to feel some slight contractions. She decided to take the train home and told her husband to meet her at the Wheaton train station to take her to the hospital in Winfield. But the baby had other plans.

“My water broke near the Elmhurst stop, and my contractions were getting stronger and closer together,” she said. “I was so embarrassed. The train conductor called 911 and told them to be waiting for me at the Lombard stop.”

She was able to get off the train and into the back of the ambulance just in the nick of time.

Once her daughter, her second child, was born without complications, they were able to bypass the emergency room and go straight to the mom and baby unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

“The doctor checked us both, and we were fine, so after that, it was a normal, standard recovery,” she said. “They were so professional and did a fantastic job. I’m so grateful they were there waiting or else my husband would’ve delivered the baby.”

thanks Dan

The Lombard Fire Department received a report of a fire at 250 Cortland Ave. at about 9:15 a.m. (3/6/15) Lombard police officers were the first to arrive on the scene and confirmed there was a fire inside the building and smoke coming from the back of the building, Assistant Lombard Fire Chief Jerry Howell said. When Lombard fire crews arrived, they upgraded the incident to a special alarm fire, bringing in assistance from neighboring communities.

The fire appeared to be concentrated in one range at Article II. It took firefighters about 20 to 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire and ventilate the building by cutting holes in its roof, Howell said.

Lombard Special Alarm 3-25-13

This from Steve Redick:

This is a place I very seldom get out to … I was halfway close so I took a ride. They were planning for something big I guess, but it was over when I arrived. I suspect some kind of machinery fire. I did manage to get some decent rig shots, and I experimented with a little fill flash too. I have never really seen the 2-piece Carol Stream Squad … kinda neat. The shots of the Lombard engine hooked up to the hydrant will make a good entry in my Suburban Rigs at Work Volume 2 someday …
