Knollwood Fire Department news

Found at createsend.com:

Many residents found a letter on their mailbox a couple of days ago headlined “Save the Knollwood Fire Department.” Is the fire department really in danger? And can the petition the letter talks about really help?

The mission of Knollwood Neighbors is to keep residents informed of issues that may affect them, but not to tell people how to vote or what to support. In that spirit, we offer the following information.

The letter makes three main points, all of which are correct:

1. Currently the three Rockland Fire Protection District trustees are appointed by the Lake County Board President, not elected by the residents. We don’t have any direct say in who represents us. That can be changed by a legal process involving a petition followed by a referendum.

2. By a new state law, it is possible for the county board to dissolve the Rockland Fire Protection District, removing any local control over our fire services. We would still pay taxes for those services (at a rate to be determined by the county), but the county would outsource them to other departments.

3. If the Rockland Fire Protection District board were changed to an elected one, it would be exempt from that part of the law and the district could not be dissolved by an action of the county board.

The petition referred to in the letter would put a referendum on the ballot for April, in which voters would decide whether to change to an elected board. The petition requires signatures of 10% of the registered voters in the district.

The letter and the petition drive are the collaborative effort of a group of concerned residents.

thanks Dan

2-Alarm structure fire in Libertyville, 9-4-14

This from Niko Stefani:

On 9/4/14 the Libertyville Fire Department was doing training with neighboring departments at 2000 N. Milwaukee Ave. In Libertyville IL. When the training session was over, the departments left to go on with the day. Later in the day there was a reported fire in the same place where the training was done. The fire had reignited and caused the first floor of the building to collapse. Libertyville pulled M.A.B.A.S Box 46-49 to the box alarm level for a structure fire. The alarm was then upgraded to the 2nd alarm for tenders only. Tender operations were utilized.  Crews remained working and they Struck out the box. Here are some Photos I took when I arrived at the scene.

3-Alarm fire in Lake Forest, January 28, 2014

Lake Forest firefighters responded to a reported basement fire Tuesday afternoon at 180 W. Laurel Avenue. The first arriving unit reported nothing showing from the outside, but found smoke upon entering the large house. Within roughly 9 minutes, the alarm was upgraded to a working still alarm, a MABAS Box Alarm, and then a 2nd Alarm as smoke began escaping from the eaves.

There was a hydrant at the end of the long, curvy driveway. The first-due Lake Forest engine and the Knollwood quint both made the driveway … with some difficulty. Fire was located in the void space beneath the first floor and then in some walls on the second floor.

The alarm was upgraded to a 3rd Alarm for additional companies to standby in the event that the fire got away from the companies working inside. The fire was contained before long without doing extensive damage to the structure of the house. Temperatures were hovering just above 0 with a negative windchill.

Knollwood firefighters have a safety line off as others work to free the driver trapped in his truck. Tim Olk photo

An over the road tractor-trailer rear-ended another tractor-trailer yesterday morning in the northbound lanes of Route 41 just north of Route 176. The crash occurred almost directly in front of the Knollwood Fire Station after the second driver apparently failed to see the first truck slowing down. The driver of the first tuck was unhurt and the other driver was trapped in his truck for almost an hour as firefighters from Knollwood, Lake Bluff, North Chicago, and Great Lakes worked to extricate him.

Tim Olk was at the scene and submitted several images.

Lake Bluff 2-11 Alarm

A fire was reported this morning in Lake Bluff and with a header visible from the fire station, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire prior to the arrival of the first unit. Companies arrived at 113 Woodland Avenue and reported heavy smoke from the structure. The fire was quickly elevated to a MABAS Box Alarm shortly thereafter. Lake Bluff was assisted by Knollwood and Lake Forest on the initial alarm, and companies from Highwood, Highland Park, North Chicago, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Countryside were due on the box alarm. A 2nd Alarm was requested another 30 minutes later as fire broke through the roof. The older tudor home needed extensive overhaul which required several companies for relief.

Tim Olk was not too far away when the fire came in and made it to the scene just after the initial companies arrived. Jeff Rudolph also made it in and submitted several images. Tim’s images will be posted in an update.
