Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from wgntv.com:

A memorial honoring some of Chicago’s bravest who helped out in New York after 9/11 is stuck in storage. The tribute to Chicago firefighters was donated four years ago but still does not have a home.

Herbie Johnson was among a group of Chicago firefighters that spent the better part of a month in New York.  They formed friendships with their counterparts that still exist to this day.

Johnson died in November 2012 while battling a blaze in the Gage Park neighborhood. The following summer, some of his friends from New York came to town to take part in a memorial golf outing held in Captain Johnson’s honor.  They brought with them some steel from a fallen tower, and it is now at Johnson’s old firehouse, Engine 123 at 51st and Leavitt.

The piece is meant to be put on public display for all the Chicago firefighters who helped during those dark days. But a second piece now sits on a pallet at a city warehouse on 39th Street collecting dust. Johnson’s family and others within the CFD ranks can’t understand why it’s still there and what is taking so long for it to be prominently displayed as a tribute somewhere in Chicago.

The Johnsons have called the South Side’s 19th Ward their home for decades.  It’s a place where many firefighters call home. Local Alderman Matt O’Shea said he only recently found out about the steel situation, and he too thinks the fire department has dropped the ball. He suggested King Lockhart Park at 106th and Western, which honors two firefighters who died in 1998, would be perfect for the steel tribute.

Fire department spokesman Larry Langford says they have been working with an artist in Utah who has volunteered his time and efforts to create a memorial.  They are waiting for a rendering from him but the artist has been sick.  The department said it continues to reach out to him, but to no avail.

CFD honors Captain Herbie Johnson (3/21/15)

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

More than two years after Chicago FD Captain Herbert “Herbie” Johnson was killed fighting a house fire, his family, friends, the fire commissioner, and the mayor gathered to honor his service and sacrifice by dedicating his badge. Captain Johnson died in November 2012.

The badge of the 30-year-plus CFD veteran was added to the Wall of Fallen Heroes Saturday afternoon. His joins 566 badges of other Chicago firefighters and paramedics killed in the line of duty.

“I was off. He was in my spot for that day. When I heard the news, I had the worst thought,” said firefighter Dan McAuliffe.

The dedication ended at Firefighters Memorial Park, where a brick was installed with Johnson’s name on it to symbolize his dedication, enthusiasm and passion, not only for the job and his family, but also for the city of Chicago.

Post Office named in memory of Fallen CFD Captain Herbie Johnson

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

The Mount Greenwood post office was renamed Sunday the “Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office,” in honor of a beloved fallen Chicago firefighter. Herbie Johnson was an Illinois Medal of Honor winner for rescuing several children from a burning building, and was well known and well liked in the department and in his South Side community. Johnson comes from a big family of fire fighters and police officers.

Humor was a big part of Johnson’s life and no one, including his wife, was afraid to use it Sunday for this dedication ceremony. Known for his larger than life personality and smile, the 32-year Chicago Fire Department veteran was killed while battling a blaze three years ago. Commissioner Jose Santiago had known Johnson well since 1980.

“A tremendous honor, nobody gets a post office named after them, especially for an ordinary guy like Herbie,” Susan Johnson said.

Susan Johnson says while so many people gave her support three years ago, she is doing the same for Dan Capuano’s family. Johnson met with Capuano’s wife, Julie. Johnson says the hardest part is months down the road when everything settles down and everyone goes away.

The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Excerpts from DNAinfo.com

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was often described as a larger-than-life character, so it should come as little surprise that a golf outing honoring the fallen firefighter reflects his enormous personality. The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic will span 10 courses throughout the Chicago area with upward of 1,000 golfers expected to participate. The golf outing drew 380 participants last year and spanned three different courses.

“It’s supposedly going to be one of the biggest golf outings that has ever been run,” said Ted Johnson,Herbie’s brother. “This is the third year, it has never been this size.”

The outing begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. Once all of the golfers have finished playing, a picnic-style reception with grilled steaks will be held from 4-8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park.

Herbie Johnson died while fighting an extra-alarm house fire on Nov. 2, 2012, in Gage Park. To honor his memory, a golf outing was established shortly after his death. Since its inception, the outing has raised some $30,000. The proceeds go to help struggling firefighters throughout Chicago with little fanfare. A portion of the funds are also directed toward a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, organizers have partnered with the coordinators of the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, SC. Herbie Johnson helped plan the event and made many friends along the way.

More than 100 golfers have already signed up for the outing. It costs $125 to participate in the outing and the after-party. Some of the elite courses require a slight surcharge. Those who simply want to enjoy the festivities at 115 Bourbon Street pay $50.

CFD honors Captain Herbie Johnson (3/21/15)

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

More than two years after Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert “Herbie” Johnson was killed while saving several families and children from an extra alarm house fire in November 2012, Chicago firefighters honored [him] as … the badge of the 30-year-plus CFD veteran was added to the honor wall or Wall of Fallen Heroes. His joins 566 badges of other Chicago firefighters and paramedics killed in the line of duty.

Johnson’s widow and children attended the ceremony at the Robert J. Quinn Chicago Fire Academy, including his siblings, who are also dedicated to public service. All are either firefighters or Chicago Police officers.

A federal investigation following [his] death blamed poor communication as a factor in the accident. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago says Johnson did not die in vain. “We’re communicating. We have a lot of plans about how we do our tactics,” said Santiago.

[The] dedication ended at Firefighters Memorial Park, where a brick was installed with Johnson’s name on it to symbolize his dedication, enthusiasm and passion, not only for the job and his family, but also for the city of Chicago.

From NIOSH:

On November 2, 2012, a 54-year-old male career captain sustained injuries at a 2-1/2 story apartment building fire then died at a local hospital. The fire occurred only blocks from the victim’s fire station. Battalion Chief 19 (BC19) was the first to arrive on scene and reported heavy smoke coming from the rear and front of the structure’s attic. BC19 surveyed the interior of both floors, while the captain and a fire fighter from Engine 123 stretched a 2½-inch line with a gated wye to 1¾-inch hoseline to the 2nd floor. BC19 radioed the captain from the rear of the 1st floor apartment that there was heavy fire in the rear covered porch and stairwell. The captain (victim) and the fire fighter stretched the hoseline towards the rear of the second floor apartment. Before water could be applied to the fire the captain told the fire fighter they had to “get out.” Engine 49 (2nd due engine) had stretched a 2½-inch hoseline down the alley to the rear and get into position to put water through the attic window. The captain moved halfway back in the hallway towards the kitchen and yelled out that he needed help. As the fire fighter drug the captain to the kitchen, additional fire fighters who reached the 2nd floor heard the Captain and fire fighter collapse on the floor in front of them. A Mayday was called by the Squad 5 Lieutenant on the second floor and the victim was carried down the stairs to the front yard. The victim responded to basic life support measures and was moved to Ambulance 19 for advanced life support. The victim was transported to the local hospital where he had complications during airway management and died.

Post Office to be named in memory of Fallen CFD Captain Herbie Johnson

The Chicago Tribune has an article about the status of a measure to rename a post office in memory of CFD Captain Herbie Johnson:

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has announced that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has approved the Herbie Johnson Post Office bill, HR 3085. The bill would rename the post office in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood community after longtime Chicago Fire Captain Herbert “Herbie” Johnson. The 54-year-old died two years ago while fighting a house fire on the city’s South Side.

“Captain Johnson heroically served area residents for over 32 years, paying the ultimate price protecting the neighborhoods he loved,” Rep. Lipinski said. “This bill not only honors him, but all first responders who bravely put their lives on the line every day for people they don’t even know. This bill insures that Johnson, his family and the sacrifices of all first responders will not be forgotten by future generations.”
Over the years, Johnson taught over one thousand recruits as an instructor at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy. After the terrorist attacks on 9-11, he volunteered with the rescue efforts in New York City. In 2007, he received the state’s highest award for firefighters, the Illinois Medal of Honor, for rescuing several children from a burning apartment.

Congressman Lipinski’s bill would designate the Mount Greenwood Post Office, at 3349 West 111th Street in Chicago, the “Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building.”
