CFD honors Captain Herbie Johnson (3/21/15)

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

More than two years after Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert “Herbie” Johnson was killed while saving several families and children from an extra alarm house fire in November 2012, Chicago firefighters honored [him] as … the badge of the 30-year-plus CFD veteran was added to the honor wall or Wall of Fallen Heroes. His joins 566 badges of other Chicago firefighters and paramedics killed in the line of duty.

Johnson’s widow and children attended the ceremony at the Robert J. Quinn Chicago Fire Academy, including his siblings, who are also dedicated to public service. All are either firefighters or Chicago Police officers.

A federal investigation following [his] death blamed poor communication as a factor in the accident. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago says Johnson did not die in vain. “We’re communicating. We have a lot of plans about how we do our tactics,” said Santiago.

[The] dedication ended at Firefighters Memorial Park, where a brick was installed with Johnson’s name on it to symbolize his dedication, enthusiasm and passion, not only for the job and his family, but also for the city of Chicago.

thanks Dan

Chicago Still & Box Alarm, 12-31-13

This from Eric Haak:

Here are some photographs of a Still & Box Alarm fire on the 6600 Block of South Oakley in Chicago.  This still went out at 0936 hrs and was boxed for the report of people trapped inside.  Engine 101 confirmed a fire in the basement of a one-story single-family residence.  An elderly woman was removed from the home but I do not know if it was fire department personnel or civilians who carried her out.  She was transported to the hospital and was alert on the scene.  It took me ten minutes to get on-scene from the time the fire was dispatched, to give you a time frame.  I included an image of Engine 123 with the memorial decal to Captain Johnson affixed below the driver’s side windshield.
