House fire in Des Plaines, 2-17-24

Des Plaines and mutual aid fire companies responded for fire in an attached garage on Middleton Court Saturday afternoon.  Des Plaines Engine 61 arrived on the scene and confirmed the garage fire. Companies made an aggressive attack as some fire communicated into the house. Engine 61 was on a hydrant in the cul-de-sac. Interior companies reported fire at the top of the stairs on the second floor and in the attic.

Des Plaines was assisted by Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, Niles and the North Maine FPD.

Oak Brook Fire Department news

This from Martin Nowak:

Today is the wake for FF/PM Tommy Sinclair from Oak Brook Fire Department. He previously served with Robert’s Park.

The wake is across the street from Station 2. They will have the light tower set up in an area for over flow cars to park.

I had the opportunity to meet Tommy during my ride time years back. He was outstanding, made me feel welcomed and even taught me new things. God bless and rest easy Tommy.

Lemont Fire Protection District history

This from Mike Summa for #TBT:

For TBT-This was the Lemont FPD’s Squad 916, a 1978 GMC/Hammerly 500/400/10F.  Shown her in a photo taken at a Worth parade sometime later, I do not recall the year.  At this time the owner was the City of Palos Hills ESDA #880.  Enjoy and comment.

Romeoville Fire Academy news

Excerpts from shawlocal.com:

The Romeoville Fire Academy has received $100,000 from Endeavor Health, which it will use to provide tuition assistance to students from underserved communities.

The money is part of Endeavor’s Community Investment Fund and was awarded to support workforce development aimed at recruiting, training, and launching firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician careers with a focus on young adults from diverse communities.

Romeoville’s Fire Academy is one of the largest training programs in the state and was one of 43 organizations chosen throughout northern Illinois by Endeavor to receive funds to support programs for behavior health, violence prevention, housing and food insecurity, and access to care, and workforce development.

They sought the funding because the academy had begun seeing a trend where students of different ethnic groups wanted to join up but would become defeated when they heard the cost during recruiting sessions. The issue is troubling since there is a nationwide shortage of firefighters and EMTs, including in Illinois.

This grant funding will allow for between 10 and 12 students from underserved communities to complete fire academy and EMT schooling and gain access to job placement. The academy has assembled a committee that is currently developing a program to allocate the grant funding to students.

Endeavor Health is Illinois’ third-largest health system, and third-largest medical group. It launched its Community Investment Fund in 2022 and has reportedly impacted more than 211,000 individuals with the services it has helped support and expand.

Oswego Fire Protection District news

The Village of Oswego will donate a parcel of land on Wolfs Crossing to the Oswego Fire Protection District to build its fifth fire station. The Fire District’s Board of Trustees will consider the donation at its February 12 meeting. Located at the southwest corner of Wolfs Crossing and Devoe Drive, the parcel is approximately one acre

From the Village of Oswego:

Village to donate land for new fire station

Location will provide additional services to Village’s east side

The Village of Oswego will donate a parcel of land on Wolfs Crossing to the Oswego Fire Protection District to build its fifth fire station. The Fire District’s Board of Trustees will consider the donation at its February 12 meeting. Located at the southwest corner of Wolfs Crossing and Devoe Drive, the parcel is approximately one acre.

In recent years the Fire District has advised the Village that a fire station is needed on the Village’s east side due to the current and projected growth in service demand. Establishing Fire Station Number 5 will provide additional fire protection, emergency medical and rescues services and will improve response times to better serve this area. A separate taxing body, the Fire District serves a total population of approximately 75,000 and has seen a 17% increase in calls for service over the last five years. “Donating this land to the Fire District is mutually beneficial for our community,” Village President Ryan Kauffman said. “It will ensure the safety of our residents and allow the Fire District to provide vital emergency services to this growing area.”

“This land symbolizes more than just acreage, it represents the unified approach from both the Village and the Fire District to continue to provide quality fire and EMS services to the residents, those that visit, and those that commute through our District,” Fire Chief John Cornish said.

The proceeds from the bond referendum the fire district passed in April 2023 will aid in the construction of the future station. The Village’s Planning and Zoning Commission will consider the Planned Unit Development for constructing the new station at its March 7 meeting.
