Some photos by Tim Olk from the 2-Alarm house fire at 2445 S. 20th Avenue in Broadview on Christmas day. (more to follow)
This from Doug Hoyt:
Following up on the Alsip front-mount “bumper pumpers”, here are a few photos of some more Division 2 rigs from the early / mid 80’s. Algonquin-Lake In the Hills Tanker 174, a Pierce/International. Not sure of the year, but I’m reasonably sure the pump is a 750 gpm and the tank is a 3000 gal. I’ve also included a close-up of that pump. Thanks for the chance to share these!

Elgin Fire Department news
Dec 24
Excerpts from theChicagoTribune.com:
Elgin firefighters canvassed the area of Division Street on Thursday — near a house where a fire left two families homeless — to pass out smoke detectors and remind homeowners about the importance of having a properly installed and functioning smoke detector.
Five fire companies visited 70 homes in the neighborhood carrying donated smoke detectors, tools for installation and a brochure about fire safety. The firefighters also offered to test smoke detectors.
Canvassing a neighborhood where a significant fire occurred is part of a new initiative to promote the use of smoke detectors and reinforcing the benefits of these life-saving devices, according to an Elgin Fire Department news release.
According to statistics, dead batteries cause 24 percent of smoke alarm failures, and three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Excerpts from ABC7chicago.com:
One person died and one person was injured early Friday morning in a rollover crash on the Tri-State Tollway at milepost 20 after a tractor-trailer heading west on I-94 lost a wheel around 5:50 a.m. between Everett Road and Route 60 near Mettawa.
The driver lost control, struck a car, hit the concrete median, and overturned. The truck driver was thrown from the cab and died at the scene. The car’s driver was transported with non life-threatening injuries .

Rutland Dundee FPD history
Dec 24
This from Doug Hoyt:
Following up on the Alsip front-mount “bumper pumpers”, here are a few photos of some Division 2 rigs from the early / mid 80’s. One is Rutland-Dundee Engine 52, a 1961(?) International, one is Rutland-Dundee Engine 57, a 750 gpm Ford/Darley with a 2000 gal. tank. Sorry that the photos aren’t the best quality; I wasn’t the greatest photographer back then, and some of the pictures got cut off in the printing. (Still looking for the negatives.) Thanks for the chance to share these!

Excerpts from thedailydispatch.com:
In the aftermath of 36 deaths during a fire in a warehouse building in Oakland, CA, Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote urged residents, businesses and visitors to report any building or venue that seems to appear dangerous to the city in an effort to prevent another tragedy.
Franzgrote said the Oakland tragedy shares a common set of contributing factors which include overcrowding; lack of adequate means of egress; inadequate fire suppression, and a significant amount of combustible products within the structure.
The chief said if someone discovers a venue that appears overcrowded, has exits blocked, or appears to be a fire trap, to stay out of it and notify the local authorities so the venue can be evaluated by professionals trained in fire code enforcement.
Excerpts from cinewsnow.com:
It’s hard to find evidence, when most of it is burnt to a crisp, but an investigator with the East Peoria Fire Department persevered, solving an open case from 2012 and receiving the State Arson Award on Tuesday.
It was in 2012 that a fire was set at a couple’s home in East Peoria. After the fire was out, Eric Duckworth worked to determine it was arson.
An investigation was launched and a suspect named Steven Gill was found. Duckworth testified for two hours in front of a grand jury and Gill received a 12-year sentence in Aug. of last year.
Duckworth said they don’t always have this kind of a clear-cut victory.
