Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from ABC7chicago.com:

At Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, members of the Chicago Fire Department’s 12th Battalion gathered hundreds of gifts for the children who can’t go home this holiday season.

“We don’t bring ten toys, we bring a thousand toys because we stockpile them for the whole year,” said Firefighter Rich Pinkney.

This is the fifteenth year that firefighters from the 12th Battalion, Second District, have been collecting and distributing gifts to children at local hospitals for the holidays.

In this instance, the act of giving is a gift itself, but none are more uplifted by the gesture than the families who benefit from the generosity of others.

The doctors and nurses here know how much the gifts are appreciated and how they serve as a reminder everyone should be given the opportunity to enjoy this special time of year.

Advocate Illinois Masonic is the first of four hospitals to get deliveries this holiday season. Children will be receiving gifts over the next couple of days at Lurie and Comer Children’s Hospitals and Rush University Medical Center.

CFD LODD Anniversary – Chicago Stockyards Fire

Excerpts from the ChicagoSuntimes.com:

The Union Stockyard fire on Dec. 22, 1910, claimed the lives of 21 Chicago firemen. A six-story brick wall collapsed on the men as flames fed by grease — a natural byproduct of animal slaughter — swept through the building.

Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago spoke at the memorial service Thursday that took place near the corner of Exchange and Halsted.

A nearby statue depicts firefighters battling the 1910 blaze. Etched on the base of the statue are the names of all firefighters who were killed in the line of duty.

Santiago emphasized that, as it was in 1910, when the fire hydrants froze the night of the fire, winter is a dangerous time to be a firefighter.

Among those who died beneath tons of collapsed brick on that fateful day in 1910 were Captain Dennis Doyle and his son, Truckman Nicholas Doyle. Their deaths came to the attention of Kevin Doyle only after a friend stumbled upon their names on the internet and shared the information.

Kevin confirmed it: His great-great grandfather was Dennis Doyle, who died alongside his son and fellow fireman, Nicholas. His other son, Edward, also a fireman, was at the scene, too, and for 36 straight hours he pulled bricks from the pile of rubble to locate his father and brother.

CFD history – Chicago Stockyards Fire

This from Steve Redick:

I found another treasure. The original newspaper clippings for the Stockyards fire from Sunday, May 20, 1934. Some of the pagers were in rough shape but some parts yielded surprisingly good results. I particularly like the summary of all the suburban companies that responded and the interview with the chief fire alarm operator at that time. My grandfather was at this fire as a member of the patrol.

Hoffman Estates Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Craig A. Roller, 63 years old, of the 600 block of Mohave Street was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m. Thursday at St. Alexius Medical Center after he died in a Hoffman Estates house fire. He was the homeowner and sole occupant, fire officials said.

The fire was reported by a neighbor across the street at 1:35 a.m., Hoffman Estates Fire Chief Jeff Jorian said.

Firefighters extinguished flames in the rear of the single-story ranch home and found Roller in a bedroom.  The house was found to have working smoke detectors, but was not equippped with a sprinkler system.

The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the home, and is being jointly investigated by the State Fire Marshal and Hoffman Estates’ fire and police departments.

Hoffman Estates had 22 firefighters at the scene in addition to mutual aid from the Schaumburg and Streamwood.

Evanston Fire Department news

Excerpts from thecityofevanston.org:

The City of Evanston announced the appointment of Brian Scott as Evanston fire chief effective Monday, January 9, 2017. City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz appointed Scott following a national search that began following the retirement of Chief Greg Klaiber in September.

“Brian Scott competed against a national pool of candidates for the position of fire chief. He proved that with his long experience as a fire professional as well as his keen understanding of the Evanston Fire Department that he is the best person for this job,” said Bobkiewicz.

A 17-year veteran of the Evanston Fire Department, Scott began his career as a firefighter/paramedic in December 1999. He was promoted to captain/paramedic in 2006, and became division chief of operations and training in 2014. In September 2015, Scott was promoted to deputy chief of operations and training, where he directed and led fire suppression operations and managed the department’s fire prevention bureau. Scott has served as co-chair of the department’s training committee, as a member of the EMS committee, and on the rescue dive team.

Scott is currently a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute in Urbana-Champaign, and is pursuing his Chief Fire Officer Certification through the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. He has a Master’s of Science Degree in Public Safety Administration from Lewis University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southern Illinois University, along with numerous fire training certificates from the Illinois State Fire Marshall and the Illinois Fire Service Institute.

Chief Scott will be recognized at the Evanston City Council meeting on January 9, 2017.

thanks Drew

Chicago Fire Department history

This from Steve Redick:

I found another treasure from the archive my dad preserved. A full page COLOR photo spread from July 1939!  This was billed as the 2nd ever thrill show with an attendance of 70,000. You can make out some classic apparatus. I was able to use photoshop to restore this to almost perfect condition. My dad must have been 10 years old at the time so I am assuming my grandpa might have been the one to put this aside originally. I think this is too good not to share.
