Calumet City Fire Department news

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

After more than 24 years in Calumet City, Deputy Chief Rich Banske’s career is over because of inappropriate posts on Facebook.

Banske, the second highest ranking fire official in Calumet City, was stripped of his position last Thursday due to crude social media comments. After being busted down on Thursday, he then resigned from the department on Friday, according to Fire Chief William Galgan.

Banske’s personal Facebook account listed his position with the Calumet City Fire Department. His inflammatory posts came to the attention of the I-Team last summer-although some dated back to more than a year ago. However, Tuesday Chief Galgan said that he hadn’t been informed of the inappropriate comments by his chief deputy until last Thursday.

On Nov. 24, 2015, Banske’s Facebook page included comments under his name on Black Lives Matter demonstrations underway in downtown Chicago: “Protest anything you want but if you interfere with my right to travel or get to my kids or my home you’re gonna get run over. And I really don’t care if you get hurt.”

Three days later came critical remarks about “the good Rev Jackson, Fr Faker and their band of idiots…” possibly referring to noted South Side pastor Father Michael Pfleger. “Chicago gang members injure and kill more young blacks than all the police departments in the country” was posted on Banske’s page.

On Dec. 2, 2015 a Banske post referred to Barack Obama as “President dumba–…There is stupid and then there is the abyss of stupid. Obama, his cronies and the anti-police protesters are way in the abyss of stupid.”

On Dec. 16, 2015: “War is for winning. Kill them all and let God sort it out. Cruise missiles and carpet bombing are just fine with me.”

Finally, on March 18 of this year, came a post in which Banske stated that “It’s bad enough that I have spent a lifetime being called a racist by idiots on the left but now the idiots like Mitt Romney are calling me one too because I support Trump. Hey Mitt-go F yourself.”

Aurora Fire Department news

Excerpts from fox32chicago.com:

Cathy Medernach and her son were walking near the retention pond behind their Aurora
home Sunday, when their dog Bailey headed out onto the pond and fell through the ice.

Medernach and her son grabbed the family’s canoe. She took the canoe out onto the ice, but then it tipped, sending her into the water which was up to her waist. She fought to climb back into the canoe while her son went inside to call for help.

The boy called his father, who told him to call 9-1-1.

When firefighters arrived, she told them to rescue the dog first, but they insisted on getting her to safety.

After getting Cathy inside where she could warm up, Aurora firefighters used ropes, and a floating sled to reach the dog. A member of the dive team pulled Bailey out of the icy waters and the dog was rushed to a nearby animal hospital.

During about 30 minutes in the water, the dog’s body temperature had dropped 10 degrees, and she’d suffered some abrasions trying to climb onto the ice.

Aurora Fire Marshal Javan Cross said there’s a lesson here, whether it’s a dog, or a human, that’s fallen through the ice.

“Leave it to the professionals,” Cross said. “We’re trained to be able to do all kinds of rescue, pets included, so let us do our jobs, and don’t make any incident worse than what it needs to be.”
