Haz mat Box Alarm in Berwyn, 4-16-15

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Berwyn police doing a well-being check Thursday discovered a decomposed body in an apartment rented by a doctor near MacNeal Hospital, a city official said … authorities are trying to positively identify the body, which appeared to be that of a man in his middle 50s. An initial investigation indicates the man committed suicide.

A maintenance worker at the building in the 3200 block of Oak Park Avenue called police about 10:15 a.m. Thursday (4/16/15) requesting a well-being check because no one remembered recently seeing the doctor who rented the unit and worked at the hospital. When police entered, they found the body and also saw two propane tanks inside. That prompted a call for a hazardous material response team, but police did not find any explosives or evidence that the tanks presented a threat.

Ford Heights cadet indicted for arson

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

A Ford Heights firefighter trainee and college student was indicted in a Cook County court Tuesday on three counts of arson for allegedly setting fire to three vacant houses in the village.

Kaumain Allen, 19, was arrested last month when a Cook County sheriff’s police officer, on patrol in Ford Heights, found him during a premise check at a vacant house on 15th Street. They said Allen told the officer the fire department had sent him to retrieve equipment that had been left behind, but police learned that the fire department had not done so or authorized Allen to be in the vacant house.

Sheriff’s police and the state fire marshal’s office had been investigating several fires in Ford Heights; 11 in vacant houses and two vehicle fires, since October. They have not said that Allen is a suspect in any fires beyond the three for which he is charged.

He said Allen also is accused of setting fires in the 1500 block of Congress Lane on Feb. 9 and March 3. In the first of those, he allegedly entered an abandoned house, poured gasoline on a pile of debris against a back wall and used a pocket lighter to ignite it, according to prosecutors.

They said that Allen on March 3 went to an empty house, ignited a road flare with a propane torch and threw the flare onto another pile of debris, starting the structure on fire.

If convicted, Allen could face three to seven years per sentence and could receive consecutive sentences for the three separate incidents, Campbell said.

Ford Heights Captain Edward Griffin said the department “never had any problem” with Allen, who began as a volunteer trainee early this year and remained active through his arrest.

2-Alarm fire in Lake in the Hills, 4-14-15

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

One person was injured and more than a dozen were displaced in a fire that broke out late Tuesday night at an apartment building in Lake in the Hills, fire officials said.

Algonquin-Lake in the HIlls Fire Protection District Chief Patrick Mullen said a call came in at 11:53 p.m. Tuesday from a passerby of a three-story apartment building on fire at 1363 Cunat Court.

[Firemen] initially arrived on scene to find the second and third floor balconies fully engulfed and started evacuation of the building, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Peter VanDorpe said. “The building has sprinklers, without [them] it would have been much, much worse.”

A man had to be rescued from the balcony of the burning building and was transported to Sherman Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire was declared under control about 1:10 a.m. … and …it appeared the bulk of the damage was on the outside of the building … 18 apartments were damaged.

Downers Grove firefighters receive surprise

https://amp.twimg.com/v/e4402370-bea1-4b6c-8ea2-9d18a806bf7f

Excerpts from NBCChicago.com:

What would you do if your favorite Chicago Blackhawks player showed up at your doorstep with dinner?

For the guys at the Downers Grove firehouse, they did what they do best and kept their cool despite being massive Blackhawks fans.

The team has made it a trend to surprise their biggest fans in unexpected ways, and in their latest video from the “What’s Your Goal” series they answer the call of Courtney O’Leary – whose goal was to have a Blackhawks player deliver dinner to her husband and his fellow firefighters.

“He is a wonderful husband and an amazing dad and he loves his job as a firefighter/paramedic and he absolutely loves the Blackhawks,” Courtney said of her husband Patrick O’Leary. “It’s my hope that he can be surprised in a really awesome way because no one on this planet deserves it more than he does.”

Prescribed burn causes damage to Crystal Lake homes

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department reported that 11 residences along Wheatland Drive sustained melted siding due to … radiant heat from a [prescribed burn] for land management purposes. Prescribed fires are often set in prairies, wetlands and other natural areas to burn off invasive plants and allow ecological regeneration.

Deputy Fire Chief Chris Olsen confirmed that the company that conducted the burn was McGinty Bros. Inc., based in Long Grove, and that the company had been contracted by the homeowners association of the Harvest Run subdivision, where the damaged homes are located.

Olsen said McGinty had the proper permits issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to do the work [and that] … it is common this time of year to see prescribed burns. Rarely do they get out of control and require assistance from the fire department to put out, he said. The fire department said it prevented further damage to nearby homes while putting out the fire. No injuries were reported.

[local resident] Rick Dowell, said he watched the fire being started in the wetlands near his property at about noon. After a short while, however, he said the flames shot higher than his barn and the workers in the wetlands appeared to become flustered. “I saw the workers running to put it out, they seemed a little panicked.

The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Excerpts from DNAinfo.com

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was often described as a larger-than-life character, so it should come as little surprise that a golf outing honoring the fallen firefighter reflects his enormous personality. The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic will span 10 courses throughout the Chicago area with upward of 1,000 golfers expected to participate. The golf outing drew 380 participants last year and spanned three different courses.

“It’s supposedly going to be one of the biggest golf outings that has ever been run,” said Ted Johnson,Herbie’s brother. “This is the third year, it has never been this size.”

The outing begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. Once all of the golfers have finished playing, a picnic-style reception with grilled steaks will be held from 4-8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park.

Herbie Johnson died while fighting an extra-alarm house fire on Nov. 2, 2012, in Gage Park. To honor his memory, a golf outing was established shortly after his death. Since its inception, the outing has raised some $30,000. The proceeds go to help struggling firefighters throughout Chicago with little fanfare. A portion of the funds are also directed toward a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, organizers have partnered with the coordinators of the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, SC. Herbie Johnson helped plan the event and made many friends along the way.

More than 100 golfers have already signed up for the outing. It costs $125 to participate in the outing and the after-party. Some of the elite courses require a slight surcharge. Those who simply want to enjoy the festivities at 115 Bourbon Street pay $50.
