Historic Chicago audio from a 2-11 Alarm fire in 1981

This from Steve Redick:

This one is a real classic and there is a good story to go with it.
The fire was in January 1981, it was at the Pavilion Apartments, 5431 N East River Rd. I was on the job less than a year at the time and I lived in the building, 2 floors above the fire. I was still big into fire fanning back then and was riding Schaumburg Truck 1 that day. Around dinner time, one of the members asked me “say don’t you live in that big hi-rise joint on river rd? The city has a 2-11 going on, 5431 I think.” Now I have spent many days and nights in various firehouses over the years and I know how the “fan” is fair game for all kinds of jokes so I smiled and said ‘yeah right’… whereupon the member said “hey I’m not kidding, its a bad fire in your building”, and I said something to the effect of ‘ya think I was born yesterday??!!!!’ He said ok suit yourself and I thought nothing more about it.
We were all sitting around the table eating and watching the news … guess what I saw on TV … fire blowing out 2 floors below my unit and impinging on my balcony!!! Holy Crap!!!! I just about choked on my pork chop. The previously mentioned member said something to the effect of “I told ya so you stubborn german *&%*&$!!!!”  A lesson learned. When I returned home the next morning (you didn’t expect me to give up a night at the firehouse did ya?) my poor cat was shell shocked and my whole apartment was covered in soot. I saw some boot prints on my door from the search team too. The end result was a good cleanup and all was well.

A few comments about the voices you will hear on the tape. The fire alarm guy for most of the fire was Al Andersen. He and I came on the job together, and he has long since retired. You also hear the gravely voice of Dick Hyland, an old boss and senior operator at the time … now long deceased. You can also briefly hear Phil McMahon, assistant chief, also long deceased. The voice of future fire commissioner Louis Galante can be heard giving orders as 2112. Louis recently died as well.

This fire occurred under the regime of William Blair, the much disliked “transplant” from LA. He was involved in an accident enroute to the alarm as you will hear , and I don’t believe he and his driver ever made it to the alarm.

This was a real nice memory to find, but it makes me realize I’m getting toooo old for all this modern FD stuff now.

Oak Lawn EEC Director leaves

An article last week announced the resignation from the Oak Lawn Emergency Communications Center:

Kathy Hansen abruptly retired from her post as director of Oak Lawn’s emergency communications center, after helping to implement a third-party staffing agreement amid the glare of village politics. The village announced her departure Friday afternoon. Hansen cited family obligations as the reason for her decision to leave the village, according to village news advisory.

Hansen rose through the ranks to director of Oak Lawn’s 911 call center and was a 20-year employee of the village. As a member the village’s public safety management team, she was involved in a controversial decision to outsource the union 911-dispatchers to a private vendor.

Former dispatchers publicly blamed Hansen for the department’s growing budget deficits, but she was always backed by Oak Lawn’s village manager and most village board members.

Hansen’s second in command, Richard Bessette, was immediately appointed as emergency communications center director. Bessette is a nine-year information technology specialist and worked often for Hansen as a project manager.

Village Manager Larry Deetjen praised Hansen as a “true public servant” who embraced technology and commitment to serving the village’s municipal 911 customers.  No one on the village’s executive team or village board forced her to leave, Deetjen said. He described Hansen’s exit as a retirement and not a resignation, even though she is too young to retire.  “Kathy walked out of here on her own terms. She didn’t ask for severance” Deetjen said.

Heard on the street … Arlington Heights apparatus updates

A reader tells us that Arlington Heights is ordering three Type I ambulances, and they are supposed to be replacing the white roofs with black. Additionally, the new tower ladder which is on order is reportedly going to sport a black roof as well.

Historic Chicago fire photos, 4-22-78

This from Steve Redick:

4-22-78, a 2-11 at 46pl and Lasalle Ave. I processed these in my own darkroom, shot on TRI-X. I was riding on Engine 84 that day and we were due on the 2-11 … dropped a 3-inch line into the Snorkel if I remember right. Used a Canon Rangefinder camera

Chicago historic fire ground traffic

This from Steve Redick:

Here’s something for you old CFD fans. This recording was made in the 80s when we were dispatching from engine 25’s former quarters on Taylor Street. The voice you hear at the beginning of the tape is retired senior fire Alarm operator Jim Evans. I believe this is a recording he made. Those with really sharp ears will detect the voice of Dennis Dougherty now deceased former assistant chief fire alarm operator.
Steve

here’s another oldie … the operator at Main is my old partner, the late Ron Heckla … he was a switchboard man and very new on the job at this time … I recognize Dick Sterling as the voice in the old 7th battalion …
