Car hits CFD Engine 13, two hurt

The Chicago Tribune has an article about today’s accident involving Chicago Engine 13.

Two women were hurt after the car they were in was struck by a Chicago Fire Department engine on its way to a call in the Loop, officials said.

The incident about 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive in the Loop, according to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford.

Engine 13 was on a call to the and had its lights and sirens activated as it attempted to go through the intersection to the call in the Loop, Langford said.

While all of the other vehicles stopped to allow the Engine to proceed, a vehicle carrying two women failed to stop, drove up alongside the fire truck and then turned in front of the truck, Langford said.

The engine could not stop and collided with the car, which was pushed onto the sidewalk and against a parked car, Langford said. The women had to be extricated from the late model car which had a full complement of side airbags which deployed, Langford said.

The women were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition but their condition had stabilized. The women were conscious and alert, Langford said.

No firefighters were injured and damage to the engine was minimal, Langford said.
