Heavy rains create multiple rescues for Naperville FD

Excerpts from CBSChicago.com:

Emergency crews [Firefighters] rescued a man from the rain-swollen DuPage River in Naperville Wednesday night, the third such incident in two days.

Someone called 9-1-1 at 7:48 p.m. to report a person clinging to a tree in the DuPage River in the 1200 block of South Washington Street, according to a statement from the Naperville Fire Department. Crews Firefighters arrived at the scene five minutes later to find the 58-year-old man holding on to the tree and surrounded by fast-moving currents.

Fire department personnel positioned a safety line downstream while Swift Water Rescue swimmers entered the water to reach the man, who appeared to be hypothermic. He was safely removed from the water about 8:17 p.m.[and] evaluated by paramedics at the scene. A witness told authorities the man had entered the river in an inflatable canoe at Pioneer Park but failed to arrive at the designated landing area. He was not wearing a personal flotation device.

Earlier Wednesday, three teenagers were rescued after a motorist spotted them trapped on an island in the river near 95th Street and Eagle Brook Lane just after 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, three people were rescued from the river after their raft flipped over near downtown Naperville’s Riverwalk. No one was injured in any of the water rescue incidents.

A flood warning is in effect for several rivers across the Chicago area, including the DuPage River, because of recent heavy rains, according to the National Weather Service.

Geneva Fire Fox River Rescue/Recovery, 4-19-14

This from Dieterich Herndobler:

I was in the area when the call went out for 2 people in the Fox River at State Street (Route 38) in downtown Geneva. So I decided to head down there. As I arrived and was walking up, Geneva Medic 252 was leaving the scene for the hospital with the first patient, which was approximately 20 minutes after the call. The second victim was not recovered until approximately 1820 hours. It was interesting to watch the tactics for a water rescue as I have never seen one. I didn’t have my camera with me, just my phone. Here are a few pictures, including Geneva’s newer engine 207.

Winfield dive rescue (2010)

When we posted the Winfield Fire District recently, Stephen Wilcox submitted images and commentary from an interesting event that was handled by Winfield last summer.

an item caught my eye, and that was the …Winfield… Dive/Rescue vehicle. So I dug back to 2010, late summer, for a call they took in for two lovers who were not paying attention to their surroundings. The West Branch of the DuPage river runs just a block or two from their quarters. A short hike up to locate them and begin the rescue. The couple were on the island when the water level began to rise rapidly. A cell phone call and help was at hand. The divers entered up stream, making their way to the island where the stranded couple were brought safely to shore.
