FEMA Grant for Roberts Park FPD

Martin Nowak found this notice on the Roberts Park Fire Protection District website pertaining to a recent FEMA award.

FEMA Grant:  Chief Ketchen reported on the recent FEMA award through the Assistance to Firefighters Program in the amount of $119,000.00.  We will use these
funds to upgrade our alerting systems in both fire stations and to establish a microwave link between them.  The District’s co-pay is $11,900 and as the Chief prepares the budget for the coming fiscal year, he will incorporate that amount under capital expenditures.  Chief thanked Lieutenant Chris Spoo for his assistance in procuring this grant
In addition, an interesting link HERE on the same website shows the department’s former apparatus:

Commercial fire in Worth 1-1-12

The North Palos Fire Protection District responded to a fire in a Chinese Restaurant at 113th and Harlem shortly before 1PM on Sunday and found the building well involved. The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE which states:

Firefighters from the North Palos Fire Protection District responded about 12:48 p.m. to the Canton Express at 113th Street and Harlem Avenue in Worth, and found the 30-by-60 foot restaurant completely engulfed in flames, said North Palos Chief Dan Russell.

Because the integrity of the structure was severely compromised and partially collapsed, firefighters were forced to battle the blaze from defensive positions outside the building, he said.

Tim Olk went to the fire and submitted several images.

House explosion in Hickory Hills

A loyal reader of this site, Campbell Holinger, was at the house explosion this evening in Hickory Hills and has submitted several images. Campbell says that the incident occurred at 9122 Barberry, in Hickory Hills which is covered by the Roberts Park Fire Protection District. They initially requested a full still alarm for the fire which was followed by a TRT Box Alarm and an EMS Box Alarm. Around 1820 they returned all companies not on the scene, which included most of the TRT equipment and the balance of the EMS Box.

Both homeowners were transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
The Chicago Tribune has an article with a video clip HERE.

“The whole front of the house was all blown out, the side of the house was blown off,” he said.”The roof looks like it went up three or four feet and came down.”

Polensky (a neighbor) said that a retired couple had lived in the raised ranch home for years and he said he saw the couple walking out of the home appearing uninjured. Police said no one was injured.

He said that when crews arrived, large plumes of smoke streamed out of the home as though something were smoldering inside. Currently nearly a dozen fire crews were in the area and were going to surrounding homes checking for gas.
