Fire department celebrates 100 years in Lombard

The Lombard Fire Department has come a long way — and extinguished a lot of fires — since it was formed in 1913.

Faces from the past helped current employees celebrate their history during a celebration Jan. 3, exactly 100 years after the department held its first meeting.

The first piece of fire equipment, a two-wheeled hose reel firefighters pulled themselves, has been replaced many times over by more modern vehicles, including a horse-drawn model purchased in 1913 with $10 assessed from each of the fire department’s 16 original members.

Fire Chief Paul DiRienzo, who rose to the department’s top spot in September 2012, said the centennial celebration was complete with historical fire helmets, badges and photos, and the opening of a 25-year-old time capsule buried when Station 1 was built.

“We had many artifacts to put on display that people donated,” DiRienzo said.

Former chiefs Jack Jones, who served from 1963-79, and Mike Torrence, who led the department from 2010 to January 2012, were among those in attendance.

DiRienzo said Jones discussed the “old days” when “a siren mounted on top of the fire station would notify members initially that something was going on.”

As the department begins its next 100 years, the contents of the time capsule will be reburied so they can age even further, and the Lombard Historical Societywill display an exhibit of fire department artifacts throughout the year.

This from D. Herndobler:

A co-worker of mine sent me a picture of the new medic unit from Lombard, Medic 64 at Station 1 in the process of having the decals applied. Word has it that it will be in service in 3-4 weeks. Equipment has to be ordered and it will have to be inspected by IDPH still. It is a 2012 Ford F450. The picture was provided Brad Delatorre from Lombard FD.

The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE.

Nine people were injured, two critically, in a fire and possible explosion at a Villa Park VFW post apparently ignited by a welder working in a basement gun range during the post’s weekly bingo night this evening, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2801, 32 E. St. Charles Road in the west suburb, about 6:30 for a report of a fire and an explosion in the building, said Lombard Fire Department Battalion Chief Ronald Rakosnik, who is set to become Villa Park’s fire chief next month.

Nine patients were taken to area hospitals, two in critical condition, three in fair-to-serious condition, and the rest in good condition, Rakosnik said.

When firefighters arrived, they found many of those who had been inside with faces blackened with soot, after the quick-moving fire spread through the one-story building, Rakosnik said. Heat from a fast-moving fire like that in the VFW can cause damage to the lungs, Rakosnik.

The fire luckily ignited before bingo had actually started for the night, so fewer people were in the hall at the time than would have been an hour later, said those who were inside at the time.

Oak Brook 2-11 Alarm fire 4-29-11

The Oak Brook Fire Department received a report of a house on fire Friday night on Forest Gate Circle near Oak Brook Station 1. The Daily Herald reports that:

A passer-by spotted flames shooting from the roof of the home in the Forest Gate subdivision shortly before 10:30 p.m. and ran to the Oak Brook fire station across the street to alert officials, Battalion Chief Jeffrey Marciniak said.

Stephen Wilcox responded to the fire and submitted a few images. He reports that the house had the equivalent of four stories and measured about 100′ x 100′.  As the first companies responded (2225 hours), they could see flames above the structure from their quarters. The fire had a hold of the roof and attic space on arrival, and the  response was elevated to a 2-11 alarm. Oak Brook’s tower ladder is out of service so the first-due truck was from Oakbrook Terrace. Oakbrook Terrace Tower 317 and Lombard Tower 52 went to work with master streams along with several two and a half inch lines. The initial loss figure is $1,600,000, the home’s full value. There were no injuries reported.

“There’s just a shell of the house remaining right now,” Marciniak said. “There’s almost nothing there.” Fire departments from 19 surrounding towns assisted in putting out the double-alarm fire over several hours Friday night. Ladder trucks from Oakbrook Terrace and Lombard provided elevated water streams to the heavily inflamed sections of the home.

Several neighboring homes in the small cul-de-sac were evacuated because of heavy smoke and a high potential for the fire to spread. The nearby roof of one home was charred and smoking. There were no injuries to neighbors or firefighters in putting out the fire.
