Fatal fire in Villa Park, 12-15-18

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com;

Villa Park police officers were first to respond to a fire at a single-family home in the 300 block of North Lincoln Avenue at 6:25 a.m. Saturday after neighbors said the elderly man who lived in the house was seen running up and down the block crying for help.

Villa Park Deputy Police Chief William Lyons said the call initially came in as a request for assistance, but soon afterward neighbors alerted 911 that a fire had broken out at the home. That’s why police were first on the scene. The first arriving officers tried to make entry in the back of the house, but were overcome by smoke. They were treated and released from an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

A woman was found dead inside. The man who lived in the house suffered minor injuries and was treated at an area hospital. His condition is unknown, but the injuries are not considered life threatening.

Villa Park Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Brandon Santiago, a former Villa Park firefighter has filed a federal lawsuit against the village alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The suit was filed on behalf of himself and other similarly situated firefighters in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Santiago claims the village failed to include holiday pay and sick leave buyback pay in his regular rate of pay. He also claims the village did not include longevity pay and acting out-of-rank pay in other firefighters’ regular rate of pay, which led him and others to not receive the full benefit of their time and one-half overtime rate. He is seeking the last three years of owed back wages, liquidated damages, and attorney fees for himself and similarly situated firefighters who also may deserve damages.

New engine for Villa Park

From the March 12 board meeting – Villa Park orders new engine to replace Engine 82

16.Resolution of the Village of Villa Park, DuPage County, Illinois, authorizing the purchase of a fire engine from Global Emergency Products for a total net price in the amount of $571,661. The fire department currently has three fire engines (pumpers) in its fleet. Two are frontline engines and the third is a reserve. Reserve Engine E80 is a 24-year-old Emergency One (E-One) with 88,000 miles and over 11,000 hours of engine time. The engine has reached its in-service life with the Villa Park Fire Department. The village has been saving to fund the purchase of this engine for five years. To avoid the 2018 price increase, the engine would be ordered prior to the end of the current fiscal year; however the cost of the engine would be paid out of SY18 funds. Funds are available in the SY18 Equipment Replacement Fund account number 65.502.02.401 for this purchase. It is estimated that the shipment date will be in March of 2019.
