Excerpts from wgntv.com:
A firefighter was found dead inside his far South Side home Thursday afternoon. Chicago firefighters responded to a blaze in the 11000 block of S. St. Louis in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood around 3:30 p.m
While searching the home and battling the fire, they discovered the body of Lt Rob Spoon in the basement. He was rushed to a waiting ambulance but it became clear he had taken his own life.
Lt Spoon was a full-time paramedic for the Chicago Fire Department and a part-time firefighter/paramedic with the Hometown Fire Department. In 2015, the Hometown Fire Department named Spoon firefighter of the year for his work coordinating its EMS department.
Lt Spoon was close friends with Lt Ryan Elwood, also a Hometown firefighter, who also took his own life on September 8th, 2015.
thanks Dan

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
Hometown Fire Protection District Fire Chief John C. Hojek Jr. recently was named the Illinois Fire Chief of the Year by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association.
Hojek was selected by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association based on his accomplishments, including life safety advancement, innovative and entrepreneurial efforts and accomplishments, education and scholastic achievements, public service performance and more.
Since becoming fire chief in 2009, Hojek has transformed the fire district from one using volunteers to one using paid and part-time personnel that provides 24/7 coverage year-round.
“The guys are really the driving force behind our fire department,” Hojek said. “We really have a great, dedicated group of firemen. We have a lot of things in the department I take pride in. The advanced life support system we have implemented is incredible.”
Hometown has about 5,000 residents.
