Working fire in Hawthorn Woods, 11-8-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Countryside FPD was alerted to a full-involved house fire in the area of Midlotian and Kruckenberg Roads in Hawthorn Woods after 11PM on Saturday(11-8-14). Once the address was confirmed, the vacant house was situated in the Lake Zurich Fire Protection District, but Countyrside units were already arriving on the scene. The building was one of several structures on the property at 12124 Kruckenberg Road which is currently being cleared for a new residential development.

Access was delay ed by two Jersey barriers that were blocking the road and had to be moved. An in-line operation supplied water from one side of the incident with over a thousand feet of 5″ hose involving Long Grove Tanker 55, Countryside Tender 411, Lake Zurich Engine , and Countryside Engine 411.  Another hydrant from a street behind the site was also used for a master stream from Countryside Tower 412 and a hand line.

This from Sam Borcia:

The Countryside Fire Department was dispatched initially to a smoke investigation inside a townhouse at 15 Timber Lane in Vernon Hills Friday, 9-5-14, at around 9:30 PM. It was upgraded to a working fire response soon after arrival. When I got there, the fire was mostly out. Two hose lines were laid, Mundelein Quint 432 aerial was to the roof, no visible fire or smoke was seen. Primary and secondary searches were clear. Red Cross was requested. I’ve included some of the fire apparatus photos.

Thanks, Sam Borcia.

Fatal fire in Cicero, 8-1-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

Cicero had a fire in a three-story, brick, residential unit in the 5000 block of 30th Street that also apparently had living space in the attic. Somewhere around 1:30Am, companies arrived to find heavy fire out the second-floor rear, with flames extending to the third floor and the attic space. They had reports that all but one resident were accounted for, though it was not known if the unaccounted for resident had been home.

After an interior attack, companies were pulled out of the building as fire vented through the roof. A defensive attack was initiated which included a master stream from Cicero Truck 1. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional companies around 2AM.

Primary and secondary searches had been completed on the first three floors, but they were unable to search the attic until the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. A victim was later discovered in the attic space.

While one engine, investigators, and the shift commander were still on the scene around 1:40AM, they noticed smoke in the residence adjoining the original fire unit. A full still alarm response was sent back to the scene as they uncovered the fire in a void space between the units. Highwood Truck 37, in Vernon Hills on a change of quarters from the original alarm, sent their company to the roof after setting up thee aerial.

Companies were released around 3AM.

Maywood Box Alarm, 5-31-14

This from Steve Redick:

I happened to be pretty close to this alarm the other night at 9th & Roosevelt. This looked like it had some potential but was well under control when I arrived just behind the box alarm companies. From what I could gather it was a basement fire that did spread upwards, but well controlled. Took a few rig shots, and the Hummer just doesn’t seem to fit on the fireground but is kinda cool anyway.

Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Winnetka Fire Department was called to a house with smoke coming from the attic at 924 Pine Tree Lane just after 9PM on Wednesday evening. Prior to the fire department’s arrival, police units confirmed smoke from a house at the corrected address of 910 Pine Tree Lane.

The first engine turned down the street and was completely immersed in smoke with near zero visibility. They pulled past the house and the truck was able to back up to the driveway. Heavy smoke at the scene was the updated size up at a split level house that was being renovated. Companies attempted an interior attack as fire burned through the roof at the rear of the house. Northfield Truck 29 reported seeing heavy fire as they rounded the corner two blocks away.

The interior attack was abandoned shortly thereafter as the fire spread throughout the attic space. Fortunately the interior crews spotted a hole in the first floor before it could cause injury to any firefighters.

The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm as an elevated master stream was put into operation from Winnetka Truck 28 in addition to multiple hand lines. As the fire progressed, Northfield Truck 29 also put an elevated master stream into service. The house backed up to Tower Road, and trucks from both Glenview and Skokie setup there but did not deploy master streams. Both ladders were put over the scene to provide illumination for firefighters.

Other units included a squad from Morton Grove, an ambulance from Wilmette, the MESS Canteen, and multiple chief officers.
