Engine 84’s was officially designated as a “Landmark” by the City of Chicago on October 1st 2003. I assume that it would mean that the City of Chicago would need to change the status of the building in order to tear it down.

The Castle in the Ghetto is fenced off currently and looks like it will be torn down unfortunately. I heard a chain retail store purchased that parcel of land.

The famous “Castle in the Ghetto.” Oh if those walls could talk….

Does anybody know if Engine 54 was out on another run when the fire at 6308 S Halsted came in as a still alarm? I understand that Engine’s 84 and 116 went in on the still alarm and normally Engine 54 and Truck 20 would be the first due on the still at 6308 S Halsted. It appears that Engine 54 didn’t go until the fire was “boxed”.
Perhaps Engine 84 was out on the street and closer to the scene when they were given the still on Halsted?
Too bad that Engine 84 and Truck 51 are no longer at 62nd and Green as they would have normally been the first due rigs in those days.
It is ironic that Engine 84 and Truck 51’s “Castle on the Green” is still there and as it turns out there was plenty of room to build a new house for them “near by” after all.
