Battalion 19 reported fire in a 1-story ordinary, 100 x 50 commercial strip mall that appeared to have started in the liquor store. Both still engines operated in sector 1 on Kedzie along with the Tower and Squad 5a. Box time was 0557 hrs bringing Engines 65 & 34. Engine 34 was positioned at the entrance to the alley of 54th place in sector 3. Tower Ladder 54 was positioned in sector 4 on 54th Place. 2-11 time was 0614 hrs and companies went defensive at this time. Battalion 4 was Safety Chief and watched progress from the roof of the adjoining building to the north. Engine 65 also worked a line from this vantage point. When I arrived, sector 3 was heavily charged with smoke and a discarded hand line was visible through the rear of one of the businesses. The 2-11 was struck around 0720 hrs.

This from Dan McInerney:
Some photos from this morning’s 2-11 at 1433 S. Kenneth. I got there late after the fire had been pretty much put out. Fire was in a 3sty, vacant apartment building, marked with the ominous red “X”. Fire was mostly throughout the 3rd floor. A tower ladder, 5-5-2’s Snorkel, a mulitversal and a few handlines were used. Both TL14 and E99 had mechanical issues – E117 coming in on the 2-11 was tasked with replacing E99, and TL5 was sent for TL14. Attached are a couple of scene shots and a few rig shots. The first 3 show the Snorkel and multiversal on the north side of the fire building

The FAO recieved several calls for the gazebo on fire in the rear. The fire quickly spread to the rear of the Chicago bungalow, through the attic and to the exposure to the west.
