Chicago companies were dispatched to a reported fire Tuesday evening at 2626 W. Roosevelt Road, a vacant, block long building bounded by Washtenaw and the railroad tracks. Engine 107 whose house is around the corner was first on the scene and reported fire on the second floor. Battalion 4 requested a still and box alarm reporting a two-story, large brick warehouse. Early on the fire fight went defensive with elevated master streams and a deck gun from Engine 107. The fire was upgraded to a 2-11 within about 20 minutes and a 3-11 was requested a half hour later by 2-1-22 when there were no longer companies in the staging area. A Level I Haz Mat was also requested after the 3-11 was in. Tower Ladder 5, Tower Ladder 10 and Squad 1’s Snorkel were working with master streams on Roosevelt Road. Roughly an hour into the fire companies began moving inside to hit the remaining spot fires before the fire was struck out between around 9:30PM.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro went to the scene. Tim reported early on that smoke was heavy and banking low on Roosevelt Road. There was not much fire to be seen and photographed.

Chicago responded to a reported fire in a church at 3450 W. 15th Street around 6AM this morning. First arriving units encountered heavy smoke and fire in a 50×150 2 1/2-story brick church and immediately requested a Box Alarm. Tower Ladder 5 and Squad 1 went to work right away before a special call was made for the reserve Snorkel. Fire was traveling fro the front towards the rear of the structure and a 2-11 Alarm was sounded.

Companies made quick work of knocking down the fire and preventing further spread. The majority of the 2-11 companies were never used.

Gordon J. Nord, Jr., Tim Olk, and Steve Redick went to the scene though the fire was basically out prior to any of them arriving. Tim and Steve submitted several images.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 5-2-11

Chicago Engine 99 was dispatched to what was believed to be a rubbish fire last night in the rear of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, a location with guard dogs. Upon arrival, Engine 99 reported that the fire was inside the building and asked for a working fire response. Shortly thereafter the alarm was elevated to a full Box Alarm. Thick black smoke was escaping from the building which could be seen from several blocks away. 2-2-4 (Deputy District 4) reported fire through the roof on his arrival and escalated the alarm to a 2-11. The fire was in an industrial brick building with a steel deck roof. Snorkel 1, Tower 5, and Tower 54 used elevated master streams in addition to several 2-1/2″ hand lines.

Gordon J. Nord, Jr. was in the area and spotted the smoke from several blocks away. He arrived as companies were cutting the overhead doors to gain access to the building. He submitted several images depicting the progression of the fire attack.
