Chicago orders new squads (more)

This from Steve Redick:

I had a great opportunity to attend a media event held by the Chicago FD Tuesday. All of the not yet in service 2-piece squad companies (1,2,5,7) were brought to Northerly Island (Many will remember this as Meigs Field) for an unveiling and photo shoot. A total of 8 units altogether were positioned for a once in a generation group photo with views of the skyline in the background. After the group shot we had the chance to shoot each individual rig as well. The lone lime green/yellow units are assigned to Squad 7 at O’Hare Field. I made several panorama images which are comprised of 6 or 7 large resolution shots. When combined they yield a large highly detailed image. The small versions I am sending do not truly showcase these images … to see a good full size view check out my website:

Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 5-7-16

This from Eric Haak:

Had a great opportunity to shoot the new Tower Ladder 39 at a still and box alarm this morning (5/7) at 59th and Carpenter.  The fire was in a red x building and appeared to have started in back porches, which were fully involved when I arrived.  Companies were defensive from the start.

Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-4-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Chicago had a Still & Box Alarm Thursday afternoon (2/4/16) in a vacant 1 1/2-story frame at 6125 S Justine. The fire communicated to exposures on either side of the original fire building, one was vacant and the other was occupied. I arrived as the fire was declared out and  stayed for some of the overhaul. Squad 5A is down and they’re using the spare squad that was striped for the television show.

2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 5/25/15

This from Eric Haak:

Here are some images from a quickly elevated 2-11 alarm fire Sunday morning in Chicago.  The incident occurred on the 6700 block of Union Avenue.  Battalion 18 was given a working fire response at about 7:15 and Engine 54 arrived moments later and confirmed they had a 2.5-story frame that was totally involved and communicating to exposures.  Battalion 18 boxed the fire on arrival and quickly reported water problems and requested a 2-11.  Eventually the occupied exposure would be fully-involved as well.  The first five engines all went to work; 54, 47, 84, 116 and 50.  Engine 84 was in spare D533 and Engine 50 was in spare D598.  Both Tower Ladders 34 and 37 were also in spares.  TL 34 was eventually put to work making it 6 hand-lines and 3 master streams in use.  The fire was struck out shortly after 8:00 and Human Services was requested for 4 adults and 6 children.

Still Alarm 236 S. Cicero, 9-7-14

This from Steve Redick

Took in this job a few days ago. Not much to see firewise but a couple of interesting things. The building was in horrendous shape..several parts of the roof were collapsed (prior to fire) and access was very limited at best. Ironically this was not classed as a red x building. I was able to get some video and photos of a Chicago stripping ladder in use as a battering ram to knock out the plywood window coverings. This is a great tool and pretty unique to Chicago…seldom used for climbing but primarily used to pull up roofing materials during ventilation.. Class A foam was also used at this alarm as well. The squad had a spare snorkel but some decent rig shots were available.

From the Chicago Tribune:

Chicago Fire Department officials and family of Fire Capt. Herbert “Herbie” Johnson were among those who memorialized him on the anniversary of his death Saturday.

Johnson died after suffering severe burns fighting an extra-alarm fire at a home in the 2300 block of West 50th Place on Nov. 2, 2012.

Johnson’s wife, Susan Johnson, received a memorial bronze fire helmet from his colleagues at the firehouse where he was stationed, Engine 123, Tower Ladder 39, 2217 W. 51st Street, where Johnson’s brother, Firefighter Teddy Johnson, still works.

As part of the ceremony, which included a firebell ringing in Capt. Johnson’s honor, a memorial was unveiled that includes a bronze fire helmet, a photo of Johnson and a plaque commemorating Johnson in honor of his work in New York City following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

thanks Dan
