 Peoria Fire Department news

Excerpts from CentralIllinoisproud.com:

For four days this week, the Peoria Fire Department said it’ll temporarily suspend service to Engine Company 2, which is out of Station #8 located on Hurlburt Street because staff have been affected by COVID-19, leaving the station empty-handed.

The temporary suspension runs from Dec. 22-25, but Battalion Chief Jim Bachman said there are no guarantees that the time frame will not expand. Engine Company 2 returned to service on Nov. 1 after the remainder of the existing operational budget for 2021 showed enough funds to bring the engine back into service. Bachman is confident that no matter what happens, the engine will be recommissioned in 2022.

Despite continuously monitoring their operational finances to stay within budget, Fire Administration said there were some unexpected expenses.

Residents will continue to receive service from the 11 fire stations within city limits.

“Regardless of how many people live in that area, I’m confident that the fire department can make whatever adjustments they have to so that when backups from other stations are needed, they are in a position to make those things happen in a timely manner,” said Jackson.

House fire in Des Plaines, 12-22-21

Des Plaines Ambulance 61 and North Maine FPD Engine 1 were dispatched to 51 N. East River Road early this morning (12/22/21) for trouble breathing. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire from the 1st floor living room of a three-unit, split-level house and reported the working fire. The ambulance crew reportedly made entry prior to the first hose line and rescued a resident from a second floor bedroom that was filling with smoke. The alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm for additional resources. The fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of all responding companies and was contained to the unit of origin.

Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Talks could resume this week between Mount Prospect and the Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District to resolve an impasse over fire and emergency medical service within the district’s service area.

Under a proposed agreement recently approved by Mount Prospect trustees, Mount Prospect, Elk Grove Village, and Des Plaines would take over the duties of the fire district, which would dissolve and yield its fire station and equipment. Three new special taxing districts would provide the funding for the municipalities.

Mount Prospect officials say the fire district is running a structural deficit because of a shrinking tax base stemming from annexations, but the fire district has not signed off on the agreement. District officials take issue with the legality of the proposed dissolution, as well as the village’s cost-benefit analysis.

“We don’t believe at this moment that the (agreement) is fair enough to our constituents,” fire district board president Carlos Maldonado said. “However, we want to make sure that we can negotiate something, not just with Mount Prospect, but with the municipalities together.”

A fire protection district trustee accused Mount Prospect of trying to shove an agreement down the district’s throat that is going to take full advantage of them, and said that Mount Prospect still owes the fire district more than $260,000 from a previous agreement.

When asked about the money last week, the Mount Prospect village manager responded, “Why would we pay them, if we’re about to take over those services?”
