Fatal fire in Zion, 12-21-20

Excerpts from Fox32chicago.com:

Zion firefighters were called about 12:20 a.m. to Carmel House senior apartments, at 2815 Elisha Ave., and found heavy smoke on the third floor. One person was taken in serious condition to Vista East Medical Center, while two people were taken for underlying medical issues that may have been exacerbated by the incident. The person in serious condition later died at a hospital. Authorities haven’t released the person’s name pending notification of family.

Crews evacuated nearby units and extinguished the fire in the room it started, though the cause of the fire wasn’t immediately clear.

Because of smoke, authorities evacuated all of the building’s occupants to Zion City Hall, which is within a block of the apartment building. All other residents were allowed to return to the building at 5 a.m., with the exception of the person who lived directly below the location of the fire. That person will be housed at a hotel until a long-term housing is provided.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from Fox32chicago.com:

A second person, Dwain Johnson, 18, was charged as one of the carjacking crew who confronted 65-year-old Dwain Williams, killing him in an exchange of gunfire. Johnson, of Gary, Indiana, was arrested Wednesday afternoon by the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force in suburban Oak Forest, police said. He appeared in court Friday, where he was denied bail on a count each of first-degree murder, attempted vehicular hijacking, unlawful possession of an automatic weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon.

On Thursday, a 15-year-old boy was charged as an unarmed accomplice in the shooting.

Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said the suspects were part of a group responsible for a number of other crimes in the area. Two other suspects haven’t been arrested.

In surveillance video of the shooting, two people with guns are seen approaching Williams as he walks towards his Jeep with a bag in his hand. Williams then retreats behind his car as a suspect with a gun rushes towards him. William fires his own gun and a suspect falls to the ground before returning to the car and fleeing. Williams was shot in the abdomen during the exchange of gunfire and died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

A 15-year-old boy faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of retired Chicago FD Lt. Dwain Williams earlier this month. The teen, who is not being identified because he is charged as a juvenile, was unarmed at the time of the shooting. He was with two other people who had guns when they confronted 65-year-old Dwain Williams Dec. 3 in an apparent robbery attempt. Police recovered a weapon and were testing it to see if it was used in the shooting.

Detectives are interviewing an adult, allegedly involved in the murder, and were still searching for two other adults. The group of carjackers, in a stolen Ford Fusion, allegedly followed Williams as he drove to Let’s Get Poppin’ at 11758 S. Western Ave. Surveillance cameras recorded the Ford as the driver parked near Williams’ SUV.

In the video of the shooting, Williams, walking toward his Jeep with a bag in his hand, is approached by two people with guns. Williams retreated behind his car as one suspect rushed toward him with a gun. Williams pulled out his own gun and fired. The suspect fell to the ground, jumped back in the car, and fled. Williams was shot in the abdomen and died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The Ford was found abandoned in Tinley Park Dec. 5. Prosecutors said DNA and fingerprints recovered from the Ford, as well as witnesses who identified him in still photos taken from surveillance footage, eventually led to the teen’s arrest. He faces multiple counts of first-degree murder, as well as a count of armed robbery. No charges against any other suspects have been announced.

The teen is a high school freshman in Chicago Heights. He lives with his mom and sister, and is active in sports and the local Boys and Girls Club.
