Lake Forest Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

At least 10 people were rescued from submerged vehicles Saturday in Lake Forest after heavy rain caused flooding. No one was reported injured, but flood conditions prompted rescues on Illinois Route 41 near Deerpath Road and on Washington Circle. Oak Brook Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

A new three-year contract for Oak Brook firefighters provides for 2.5 percent annual salary increases and 15 to 20 percent employee contributions toward health insurance premiums, depending on the type of coverage chosen. Those components are the same as was the case in the previous contract, which ran from 2013 through 2015.

The final year of the previous contract called for firefighters to have a salary range of $62,154 to $83, 907, and for lieutenants to have salaries ranging from 73,599 to $99,358.

While that contract was effective as of Jan. 1. 2013, it wasn’t executed until June 23, 2014, about 1½ years after the effective date.

The contract covers 28 Oak Brook firefighters and firefighter/paramedics, but not the fire chief or three battalion chiefs nor contracted personnel.

Milwaukee Fire Department news

Excerpts from tmj4.com:

For the first time in a decade the Milwaukee Fire Department is recruiting applicants for firefighter positions, despite cuts outlined in the mayor’s budget.

The last time Milwaukee fire accepted applications for firefighter positions was 2007.  Over the years when jobs open the Fire and Police Commission go to the list created at that time.  Recruiter Kischa Buford said the commission exhausted the list so it’s time for a new one.

There is no age limit, but applicants have to be 18 to apply, a U.S. Citizen, and possess no felony convictions plus a high school diploma or equivalent.

“We really are looking for great people who are going to be great neighbors and great representatives of the fire department and in turn make great public servants,” said Milwaukee Fire Captain Joshua Parish.

The city of Milwaukee is set to close six fire stations as part of the mayor’s 2018 budget.  There are no layoffs involved, but 75 department vacancies will not be filled.  Parish said the department still needs firefighters.

It’s now a waiting game for hopeful applicants.

Applicants have until Friday at 11:59 p.m. to apply.  An application is here.

thanks Asher

Dekalb Fire Department history

Excerpts from the daily-chronicle.com:

The DeKalb Fire Department has been a cornerstone of the DeKalb community for almost 150 years, saving lives and property. For October’s Local Lore presentation, the Ellwood House Museum will welcome Capt. Luke Howieson of the DeKalb Fire Department.

Howieson will outline the history of the fire department, from the beginning as a volunteer fire company in 1869 to the ready-for-anything, trained and equipped career department it is today. This presentation also will focus on the connections between the fire department and the Ellwood family. Several historical artifacts and photos will be on hand for viewing, as well as antique and modern fire equipment.

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, the presentation will be at noon Oct. 20 at the Ellwood House Museum Visitor Center, 509 N. First St. in DeKalb. The event is free of charge and visitors are welcome to bring a sack lunch.

Local Lore is a series of adult lectures. Each month – March through November – a knowledgeable guest speaker presents a unique one-hour program relating to DeKalb County history. Lectures are free to attend. This year, Local Lore is being presented in partnership with DeKalb area historic sites and museums, including Glidden Homestead, Gurler Heritage Association, Egyptian Theatre, Joiner History Room and DAAHA. The series is funded in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.
