Unconscious workers rescued from Long Grove sewer

This from Larry Shapiro:

Two workers from a private contractor were in a sanitary sewer on Route 53 west of Old McHenry Road near noon today when they were overcome by fumes which rendered them unconscious. The Long Grove Fire Department responded to the incident which is less than a mile from their station and found a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy assisting another individual with trying to pull one worker through the manhole.

Firefighters on air were able to get into the sewer and retrieve the men within minutes. Both were revived and transported to an area hospital. All personnel involved underwent a decon due to the noxious gas and substance in the sewer. The deputy sheriff was also examined on the scene.

CFD firefighter shot by CPD (updated and corrected)

Can’t always rely on the initial reports:

At 4:06PM the Chicago Tribune filed this updated report:

An off-duty Chicago firefighter was shot by police this afternoon after he jumped out of a car and appeared to point a weapon at officers in a store parking lot in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, authorities said.

The firefighter was in a shooting stance, holding a dark object in his hand, when he was shot about 12:45 p.m. at a CVS pharmacy at 103rd and Pulaski Road, officials said. The object turned out to be his wallet, according to Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and was undergoing surgery, the hospital said. Camden said his condition was stable. Officials earlier said he had died.

Officials also initially said the firefighter was shot after he opened fire on officers responding to a report of a man who was suicidal.

Giving an updated version, Camden said police had been notified by the man’s wife saying he was depressed and she was worried for his safety because he had a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had been despondent in the past, Camden said.

Police were told the firefighter was either at a pharmacy on 111th Street or a pharmacy on 103rd Street, Camden said. When police did not find anyone fitting his description at 111th Street, they went to the CVS on 103rd Street and found him in the driver’s side seat of his car, talking on the phone, Camden said.

Officers asked him to show his hands and get out of the vehicle, Camden said. The man made the sign of the cross and flung the door open and jumped out with his hands in a “combat position,” holding a dark object appearing to be a gun, Camden said.

No gun was found on the scene, Camden said, but a gun was found at his home.

Records show the firefighter is also a paramedic and lives about two miles from the shooting.

At 2:27PM the Chicago Tribune filed this report:

A Chicago Fire Department employee was shot and killed by police this afternoon after he fired at officers responding to reports of a man threatening suicide in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, officials said.

Police were called to 103rd and Pulaski Road around 12:45 p.m., according to fire officials and Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The man was shot after he opened fire on the responding officers, Camden said. Officials said the man worked for the Chicago Fire Department.

The shooting occurred at a CVS Pharmacy parking lot at 3951 W. 103rd St., according to Fire Department spokesman Juan Hernandez.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, where he died, according to  Hernandez and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts honors firefighters

The Daily Journal has an article about three firefighters being honored by the state:

Longtime firefighters Lyle Coffman and George Grosso, of Limestone Township, and Jim LaMotte, of Momence, have received the outstanding community service awards from the Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts.

A multigeneration firefighter, Coffman has served as a firefighter and fire district official for a total of 49 years in three different departments. He was appointed trustee of the Limestone Township Fire Protection District in 1986 and has been board president for more than a decade.

He has served in the Limestone department since 1972, has been a state director of the Illinois Association of Fire Protection Trustees and is a former president, and has served as president of the Kankakee County Fire Trustees Association.

He was one of the first paramedics in the Kankakee area and was instrumental in making the Limestone Township department one of the first advance life support providers in the region.

Grosso has been a firefighter and district official since 1958 and has seen the department grow from a small volunteer operation to an organization with full-time, part-time and paid-on-call firefighter/paramedics. He was appointed to the board of trustees in 1991 and is currently the treasurer of the district.

LaMotte started with the Momence Fire Protection District as an 18-year-old volunteer in 1958 and has served as firefighter, chief, board member and president. He was chief for 21 years, after a year as acting chief.

He served as an officer of the Illinois Firefighter Memorial Foundation, a member of the Kankakee County Board, chairman of the Kankakee County Emergency Telephone System Board, chairman of the board of Good Shepherd Manor in Momence, and a board member of Kankakee County Drug Court.

thanks Chris
