Saw the new truck sitting in the bay today. It was positioned in a usually empty spot though. The normal truck 52 spot was empty when I went by, but yesterday they were backing in the reserve tower in T 52’s place.

That’s exactly what I’m saying, thanks DMc77. Obviously the rig that a company arrives on doesn’t totally dictate what task they’ll be assigned to on the fireground, however it will probably have some bearing. It doesn’t make sense for an engine and truck company to pull up on a working fire and have the truck guys lead out, especially if their rig doesn’t have a pump, hose, or water.
With many suburban departments, if a truck or quint company pulls up on a fire first, that company will lead out because they have that capability. Or they may choose to forgo the truck company duties for a period of time so the truck guys can assist with the fire attack. What I was saying is that I like the more defined roles they seem to have. If you arrive on a fire on the truck, you know you’re going to work doing truck work, not leading out. Again, not being on Schaumburg, I don’t know if this is how they do things, but I’d imagine it’s something similar.

Scott I think what Joe is trying to say is that a SFD truck co. isn’t going to arrive first due at a fire and lead out a line from their rig, as they don’t have that capability. They could however lead out a line from an engine if the IC directs them too.

Your statement about interior attack crews is completely incorrect and obviously based on no real facts as to how firefighting operations occur.. in ANY fire dept. Having a pump or not does not affect what a truck company does. I’m not on SCHM however I am on one that works with SCHM FD. Sqd 55 is the primary vehicle with full hurst equipment. Sqd 55A is the support vehicle, the primary purpose of which is the MABAS Div 1 Technical Rescue Sqd. SCHM does bring it on entrapments as it does have more specialized equipment and shoring materials. The still district truck company and the squad are dispatched to entrapments in the entire town, not just highways. If the truck gets there first and there is a need for extrication equipment, by all means they will start it. They do not wait for the Sqd to show up.

Schaumburg has a 2 vehicle squad company in addition to 2 trucks so they really don’t seem to have the need for an additional dedicated “heavy rescue” type vehicle. From what I understand Schaumburg will put battery operated Hurst tools in the front bumper. Their trucks have hydraulic tools on them and they respond to pin-ins and MVCs on the highway, but the heavy rescue operations primarily go to the squad I believe.
Schaumburg seems to do things a little differently than most area departments. Their trucks don’t have pumps so their truck companies probably will never be used as interior attack crews on a fire because their trucks can’t pump. Most area departments are going with quints or trucks with pumps to serve more of a dual purpose. Personally, I like the way they do things, obviously not being a part of the department I really don’t know, but it seems like it would make things less confusing on the fireground. Plus it’s more traditional, which I’m always a fan of.

Both of the Schaumburg Trks (52, 53) and Sqd 55 carry HURST extrication equipment. This is not new, always have.

I was wondering with the schaumburg new ladder, whats kept in the extended front bumper. Is it extrication gear and will it be used a heavy rescue too .
