This from Larry Shapiro:
Schaumburg firefighters were called to 1015 Newport Harbor this afternoon (10/2/16) after multiple callers reported a fire. Callers stated that an elderly resident was trapped on a second floor balcony on the east side of the four-unit, two-story building. First arriving companies reported smoke from the attic.
Schaumburg Battalion 5 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire and requested a second truck and two additional ambulances after receiving reports of a second victim. Squad 55 was the first-in engine and initiated fire attack encountering high heat and zero visibility with hoarder conditions within the second floor unit. Truck 53 made the rescue off the balcony, reportedly carrying the elderly resident down a ground ladder.
The fire was in a rear bedroom with fire blowing into the hallway and running the entire attic space. The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes though companies were at the scene for roughly 90 minutes. There was no extension to neighboring units. The resident was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

This from Larry Shapiro:
Schaumburg firefighters were called to 809 Holyoke Court Friday morning (7/8/16) for a fire in the laundry room of a split-level house. Smoke was pushing from the lower level window as the first units arrived prompting an upgrade to a Code 4 working fire. When firefighters made entry they found that the fire was contained to one room and made quick work of extinguishing the fire and ventilating smoke. Additional companies were returned.
As an aside, in March of 2011, Schaumburg companies battled a fully-involved house fire across the street that went to a Box Alarm.

Schaumburg companies were sent to the SB IL Route 53 local lanes just past I90 just after midnight on Wednesday (6/8/16) for fire in a semi-trailer. They encountered fire in a 40′ trailer that was almost fully-loaded with commercial uniforms. Battalion 5 requested a tanker from Long Grove and the Elk Grove Township to supply Engine 52 with two lines off. Schaumburg Engines 51 and 54 plus Squad 55 were all on the scene and had used their tank water.
Rolling Meadows Engine 16 and Hoffman Estates Engine 21 were also on the scene assisting with manpower during the almost two-hour process to remove the smoldering contents of the truck. Also at the scene were Schaumburg Trucks 52 and 53, and Schaumburg Ambulances 53 and 54.

The Daily Herald has an article the settlement of a lawsuit filed by a firefighter:
Schaumburg officials Tuesday settled a 2012 discrimination lawsuit filed by one of their firefighters who said his age was the reason he lost the position of fire department public education officer in 2009. The settlement agreement calls for the village’s insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, to pay Schaumburg Firefighter Scott Kody $170,000 and for Kody to separate from the village.
The lawsuit originally sought Kody’s reinstatement as public education officer, back pay for time missed and reimbursement of legal fees.
Assistant Village Manager Paula Hewson said the decision to settle the case was made by the insurance company, which is paying the full amount. The village already has met its $100,000 deductible in defending itself in the case.
Kody’s exact age was not available Tuesday, but he’s older than 65 based on the medical benefits he’s entitled to, according to the village. He has been on unpaid leave since earlier this year and is applying for a disability pension, having exhausted all of his sick time. Kody’s recent sick time and application for the disability pension are unrelated to his lawsuit, Village Attorney Rita Elsner said.
According to the federal lawsuit, Kody joined the Schaumburg Fire Department in 1982 and worked as the public education officer from 1984 until he was removed from that position in September 2009. In April 2009, he also had been removed from various other positions, including the open house and school program, the suit stated.
The lawsuit claimed Kody was subjected to ageist comments from superiors and was encouraged to retire as public education officer because he was “getting up in age.”
When the lawsuit was filed, then Village Manager Ken Fritz disputed all its allegations. Fritz said performance was the reason for Kody’s removal from that job and that the position was then being held by someone older than Kody.
