Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-11-17 (part 3)

This from Steve Redick:

2600 W 35th St. Heavy smoke conditions reported in a large, fire resistive warehouse occupancy… discovered to be an auto fire deep within the building. MVU 923 was used to pressurize the building and clear the residual smoke, seemed to be very effective. Also got several decent apparatus shots.

Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-11-17 (part 1)

This from Eric Haak:

Here are some pictures from a Still & Box Alarm in Chicago on Saturday morning (2/11). The 15th Battalion was first on scene and reported light smoke showing from a 600 x 200, 4-story, fire-resistive warehouse. Seven minutes later, the 15th reported they had heavy smoke in the interior and asked for the box. It turned out to be an auto. The MVU was brought in to clear the smoke.

Box Alarm in Batavia, 4/25/15

This from John Tulipano:

On Saturday April 25th at approximately 6:55pm Batavia was dispatched to an automatic alarm at 601 Kingslands Dr. Companies arrived to find heavy smoke in the building, and subsequently upgraded to a general alarm and then to a MABAS box alarm.

The fire was knocked down quickly, but heavy smoke remained throughout the building and a special call was made for the MVU from MABAS Division 1 to assist in ventilation.

Working fire in Chicago, 4-17-14

This from Steve Redick:

I was able to attend an unusual incident last night. There is a small area that belongs to Chicago, that lies along Foster ave west of River rd, adjacent to O’Hare Field. This is much closer to Rosemont and Schiller Park, yet it belongs to CFD. It isn’t really a good run for either the airport companies nor engine 11. Sort of a no-man’s land. Rosemont responded to smoke in the area, as well as Schiller Park , Desplaines, and Park Ridge. CFD was notified as well. Arriving units found a well-involved tour/party type bus inside an industrial building. Park Ridge, due on auto-aide, used a deck gun to hit the bulk of the fire. Chicago companies arrived and worked in concert with all the suburban units. Another interesting aspect to this was that MVU (924) was used. This rig lives at O’Hare Field and most of us fire fan types have never actually had a chance to see the unit in operation. I also took a photo or two of the various municipality street signs at each end of the block. They used suburban style hydrants, but I think I heard the sprinkler connections on the fire building were Chicago threads. All in all a “once in a billion years” kinda deal.

Northbrook Box Alarm 10-10-13

For the second time in a week, there’s been a need for the MABAS Division 1 MVU to clear a large facility of smoke from an fire within the building.

Northbrook companies were dispatched to a fire alarm with a followup call reporting stacks of cardboard burning inside a large industrial building at 725 Landweher Road early Thursday afternoon. The address is within a block of Northbrook Station 10, and the first units arrived very quickly and reported an evacuation with smoke showing. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for additional units after the battalion chief arrived, followed by a MABAS Box Alarm shortly thereafter.

The fire , which was contained to the area of origin, created an extensive amount of smoke, and an impressive header was visible for a good while. The MVU was requested and  companies did their best to pressurize the building to clear the smoke.

Units at the scene included two engines, two ambulances, a tower ladder, squad, and several chiefs from Northbrook plus mutual aid from Glenview, Deerfield, and Highland Park with trucks, Glencoe, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Buffalo Grove, and Wheeling with engines. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Prospect Heights were due with ambulances along with chief officers from Glenview and Wheeling.

Larry Shapiro was at the scene … late … and submitted images and a brief video.

Smokey inside truck fire in Wheeling 10-8-13

This from Larry Shapiro

Wheeling and Prospect Heights companies were dispatched after 3PM on Tuesday to the FedEx Ground facility at 1430 S. Wolf Road. The caller reported a delivery truck was on fire inside the building.

The first units on scene reported a truck fire inside the building with heavy smoke. They determined that only the engine compartment was burning and not the storage area of the truck, which later was determined to be empty.

The MABAS Division 1 Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) was brought to the scene and put to work in an effort to clear the large building of smoke.

I arrived as the fire was contained and got a few shots plus a short video.

Dolton Box Alarm 3-31-12

Dennis McGuire, Jr. submitted the following:

Dolton FD had a Box Alarm this morning around 0630-0700 at 300 Sibley Blvd. It was a large vacant building 200×200 with a bow string truss that had been used as an  entertainment center. A Buds Ambulance crew noticed smoke coming from the building and called it in. A Dolton engine got on-scene and found fire thru the roof in the rear. Upon entry the crew went to the 2nd floor and found fire in a room and in the walls on the interior. This 2-story area was built inside the open area of the building.  A good knock kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the heavy timber building.

MABAS 27 MVU was special called to vent the heavy smoke conditions in the open floor area in the center of the building.
I got there after the fire was knocked. This building had been built as a Model City Food grocery store.
