3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-29-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Chicago had a 3-11 Alarm fire last night (4/29/16) at 3327 W. 48th Place. Companies had a four-story, 100×300 building filled with mattresses. I arrived at the tail end of the incident and thought I’d share a few apparatus shots. I know that several other contributors were there from the early stages, so here are some of the specialty pieces including the Mobile Battery Vehicle 6-3-9, Rehab Unit 5-7-1, 5-11 Club Canteen 4-0-2, Comm Van 2-7-4, and 9-2-4 the MVU from O’Hare which was special called, along with an all red buggy and another with blue lights.

Commercial fire in Wheeling, 11-2-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wheeling firefighters were called to a commercial laundry at 45 W. Hintz around 7PM for a reported fire in the building. The first engine reported a large industrial building with an evacuation but nothing showing. Employees said there was a fire in the building and upon entry they found a machine fire roughly 500 feet into the structure. Some fire was reported along the exhaust stack on the roof prompting an upgrade to a Code 4 for the working fire. The fire was extinguished though with the companies from the initial alarm. The Division 1 MVU (housed in Wheeling) was brought tot he scene to clear the smoke from the building.

Here are a few images and a short video. More photos are at shapirophotography.net.

Northbrook Box Alarm 10-10-13

For the second time in a week, there’s been a need for the MABAS Division 1 MVU to clear a large facility of smoke from an fire within the building.

Northbrook companies were dispatched to a fire alarm with a followup call reporting stacks of cardboard burning inside a large industrial building at 725 Landweher Road early Thursday afternoon. The address is within a block of Northbrook Station 10, and the first units arrived very quickly and reported an evacuation with smoke showing. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for additional units after the battalion chief arrived, followed by a MABAS Box Alarm shortly thereafter.

The fire , which was contained to the area of origin, created an extensive amount of smoke, and an impressive header was visible for a good while. The MVU was requested and  companies did their best to pressurize the building to clear the smoke.

Units at the scene included two engines, two ambulances, a tower ladder, squad, and several chiefs from Northbrook plus mutual aid from Glenview, Deerfield, and Highland Park with trucks, Glencoe, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Buffalo Grove, and Wheeling with engines. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Prospect Heights were due with ambulances along with chief officers from Glenview and Wheeling.

Larry Shapiro was at the scene … late … and submitted images and a brief video.

Smokey inside truck fire in Wheeling 10-8-13

This from Larry Shapiro

Wheeling and Prospect Heights companies were dispatched after 3PM on Tuesday to the FedEx Ground facility at 1430 S. Wolf Road. The caller reported a delivery truck was on fire inside the building.

The first units on scene reported a truck fire inside the building with heavy smoke. They determined that only the engine compartment was burning and not the storage area of the truck, which later was determined to be empty.

The MABAS Division 1 Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) was brought to the scene and put to work in an effort to clear the large building of smoke.

I arrived as the fire was contained and got a few shots plus a short video.

Local apparatus at FDIC 2012

There were four area units on display this year in the FDIC Exhibits. New engines for Carol Stream, Fermilab, and Northlake were shown in separate booths and the MABAS 10 MVU was also in the exhibit hall.

A bit of “retro” in the Pierce booth.

Most have probably seen the newest Pierce cab and chassis that was unveiled last year – the Dash CF. It featured a grille that matched the Velocity, the Impel, and the Arrow XT.

As it turns out, the engine sits in the back of the cab and the grille is for aesthetics only. This year, Pierce displayed a 105′ rear-mount, PUC, quint on the Dash CF chassis without a grille. If one looks beyond the one-piece windshield and the cab-tilt cutouts, the unit has the appearance of an early Pierce Arrow or a Javelin.
