Man dies after electrocution in Addison, 3-28-17

This from John Tulipano:

Firefighters from Addison and Lombard worked to free a victim who was trapped in a tree after being electrocuted in the area of Villa Avenue and Myrick today (3/28/17).

John Tulipano

A 51-year-old man died and another was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after they were shocked by power lines while trimming trees in an Addison backyard.

Jose Fulgencio-Hueramo, of Melrose Park, was pronounced shortly before noon at Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights.

At about 11 a.m., Fulgencio-Hueramo and another person were cutting limbs in a backyard near Villa Avenue and Myrick Avenue in Addison where both individuals made contact with the power lines.

One person was thrown from the ladder adjacent to the tree and landed on the ground. The second person was secured in the tree. When ComEd turned off power to the lines, firefighters got them down from the tree. One was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

“They were able to cut the power to the power lines, and at that point firefighters from Lombard and Addison went up there and were able to extricate the gentleman from the tree at that time,” said Joe Leone, the Addison fire chief.

Police said the victims appear to not be with a private tree-cutting service.

It was immediately unclear how the individuals got tangled in the power lines.

Lombard Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Faced with ever-increasing calls for service, the Lombard Fire Department now will staff a third ambulance every day round-the-clock.

Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Howell said the department responded to 6,699 ambulance calls last year and a couple hundred of those had to be answered by crews from neighboring communities because Lombard’s were busy elsewhere. He said he expects the number of calls to increase again this year for a variety of reasons.

Howell said the department acquired its third ambulance in September, but only recently received funding from the village board to staff it round-the-clock like its two other ambulances.

The department also can use engines to provide medical aid because they carry the same ALS equipment and medications as the ambulances, but only ambulances can transport patients to the hospital.

Every Lombard firefighter is a state-certified paramedic.

Lombard Fire Department news

Excerpts from the VillageofLombard.org:

Village of Lombard names Richard A. Sander as next Fire Chief

Sander_Rick145_thumb.jpgThe Village of Lombard has named current Naperville Deputy Fire Chief Richard A. Sander as its next fire chief beginning on October 3, 2016.

Sander has served the City of Naperville since 1998 as a firefighter paramedic, lieutenant, captain, and acting battalion chief, before being promoted to deputy fire chief in 2011. Sander’s career began as a firefighter and paramedic in 1979 with the City of Harvey, IL. Since then he has also worked for the City of Aurora and the Village of Oak Brook.

Village President Keith Giagnorio said the village staff was impressed by Sander’s qualifications and more than 33 years of experience in the fire service. Sander is scheduled to be sworn in at a regularly scheduled Village Board meeting on September 15, 2016.

While serving the City of Naperville, Sander oversaw 10 fire stations and served as the incident commander at major emergency incidents. Sander offers extensive knowledge of fire science as well experience serving as the President of the Sugar Grove Fire Protection District’s Board of Fire Commissioners and the Post Committee Chairman for Naperville’s Explorer Post Fire Cadet Program.

Sander received his EMT Paramedic Certification in 1983 and achieved his Bachelor of Fire Science from Southern Illinois University in 1993. He is a Certified Illinois State Fire Marshal Officer II and a Certified Illinois Office State Fire Marshal Fire Apparatus Engineer.

Lombard Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

There have been many memorable moments for Paul DiRienzo in his 34 years of service with the Lombard Fire Department, but a silent parade marking the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks was one of the most striking.

As DiRienzo, 53, prepares to retire July 6 from his position as fire chief, countless other memories come to mind as well: Helping deliver several babies, breaking down walls during house fires and holding hands with people in distress.

The Lombard native took a paid on-call position with the fire department in October 1982. He became a full-time employee on July 6, 1986, exactly 30 years prior to his upcoming retirement date. When DiRienzo started working full-time for the department there were a minimum of four firefighters on duty each day. That number has grown to 15, to accommodate the more than 7,000 calls a year the department receives.

He stayed with the department so long because he enjoyed serving the town he grew up in and felt reinvigorated with each promotion. He became a lieutenant in 2001 and took on the role of battalion chief in 2012 for a short period before becoming chief.

A national search is underway to find DiRienzo’s replacement. Last week, the village board agreed to pay Patrick Gericke, a retired Matteson fire chief, $60 per hour to serve as interim fire chief for three months, or until a new chief is hired. Gericke served as interim chief in Lombard in 2012 as well, prior to DiRienzo’s promotion.
