Beach Park commercial fire 5-20-12

Police officers reportedly spotted a fire early this morning at the Happyland Pet Store located at 11432 W. Wadsworth Road in Beach Park. First arriving companies found heavy smoke the the alarm was upgraded very quickly.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that:

The Beach Park Fire Department said firefighters were called to the building that houses the Happyland Pet Center, 11432 W. Wadsworth Road, at 6:06 a.m.

Initial reports said a person was trapped in one of the apartments above the store, but all residents of the building were able to escape the fire.

The Chicago Tribune has an article which states that:

A Beach Park pet store was completely destroyed this morning after a blaze broke out in the basement and killed hamsters, gerbils, fish and reptiles, officials said.

Firefighters were alerted about 6 a.m. to the Happyland Pet Center located at 11432 W. Wadsworth Rd. and found heavy smoke, said Beach Park Fire Department Chief Paul Tierney.

Firefighters went into rescue mode and searched the upstairs of the structure when a flashover occurred. A water supply issue at the scene slowed down firefighting efforts and assisting companies were called in from 15 surrounding communities including Waukegan, Zion and Newport, Tierney said. About 75 firefighters were called to the scene.

“The fire had been burning for quite some time before we were called,” said Tierney. He added the fire originated in a concrete bunker-type basement that had only one entrance.

Jeff Rudolph, Tim Olk, and Larry Shapiro all went to the scene. Jeff arrived shortly after the 2nd Alarm was pulled and submitted several images.

The North Chicago Fire Department responded to a reported fire in a commercial auto-body facility last night and arrived to find heavy fire in a one-story commercial building with exposures on both sides. The alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm which brought mutual aid companies to the scene. Not long after, a structural collapse of the original building occurred as fire spread to both exposures.

There were several special calls initiated which increased the units on the scene. Several hours later the alarm was elevated to a 2nd Alarm although the actual number of companies on the scene made the alarm in essence much greater.

Engines that were pumping came from North Chicago, Waukegan, Newport Township, Knollwood, Abbott Labs, and Lake Forest. Additional engine companies responded from the Great Lakes Naval Base, Winthrop Harbor, Lake Villa, and a second unit from Newport Township. There were five elevated master streams in operation including tower ladders from North Chicago and Round Lake, in addition to Highland Park, Zion, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods ladders. A Grayslake ladder and Arlington Heights tower were not put to use. Arlington Heights though receives the prize for coming the farthest … 32 miles.

Lake Bluff, Gurnee, and Deerfield had squads at the scene and chief officers responded from Waukegan, Newport Township, Wauconda, and Lake Forest. There were two North Chicago ambulances on the scene plus medic units for rehab from Libertyville and the Antioch Rescue Squad.

The fire was directly across the street from Abbott Labs and their fire department was able to supply water from the Abbott property reservoir to allow greater defensive operations than the North Chicago city water supply would allow.

There were no reported injuries associated with the fire and the alarm was struck-out late in the evening. Companies were released from the scene after midnight as an excavator was brought in to knock down the remnants of an unsafe building.

Shaun Unell and Larry Shapiro both were at the scene and have submitted images. More photos can be viewed HERE.

A video will be available soon.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 12-14-11

The Chicago Tribune reported the following about a 2-11 Alarm fire this morning:

Nearly 100 Chicago firefighters this morning battled an extra-alarm blaze on the city’s West Side that jumped from a Chinese restaurant to two storefronts with second-floor apartments, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the 2-11 alarm fire that appeared to have started in the one-story restaurant  near the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Harrison Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The blaze, fueled by tar on the roof of the restaurant, then traveled to two buildings on either side, said Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado.

The fire broke out about 3 a.m. and spread quickly despite a steady rainfall. It was finally brought under control about 5:45 a.m. Fire officials said the fire was fueled by tar on the roof of the restaurant. As many as 99 firefighters were on the scene.

The complete article can be found HERE.

Gordon J.Nord, Jr. was on the scene and submitted several images from the fire.
