2-Alarm building fire in Northbrook 7-1-13

The Northbrook Fire Department responded to a reported fire in a third floor apartment behind Station 11 at 620 Ballantree Drive shortly after 6PM on Monday evening. Initially, the reports from police officers left fire officials to believe that it was a barbecue grill on a deck, but companies soon found fire inside the third floor unit. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire, and multiple companies entered the building. Not long after they were inside the building, conditions deteriorated and an evacuation order was given. Heavy smoke pushed out of the building as it flashed, and a MABAS Box Alarm was requested as companies went defensive.

Units on the initial alarms included Northbrook Engines 11 and 10, Ambulance 11, Battalion 11, Tower 12, and Glencoe Engine 30. The Code 4 brought  Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52 and Northfield Truck 29. The box alarm added Glenview Truck 14, Wheeling Engine 42, Winnetka Engine 28, Prospect Heights Squad 9, and Highland Park Quint 33 in addition to companies for change of quarters.

A 2nd Alarm was requested shortly after the box and brought Highwood Truck 37, Deerfield Engine 20, Morton Grove Squad 4, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Truck 53, the Division Comm Van, and several chief officers.

The building had a mansard roof which masked a fair amount of fire and required extensive ventilation to extinguish all of it. Engines 11 and 32 had deck guns flowing, there were elevated master streams from Tower 12 and Truck 14 in addition to at least three hand lines.

Tim Olk arrived with the first-due companies and Larry Shapiro arrived after the box alarm. Both will have many images plus there will be a video from Larry.

Here are a few images that were submitted.

Northbrook house fire 6-30-13

Sunday evening at roughly 9:15PM, the Northbrook Fire Department received a call reporting fire in the home at 1337 Walters Avenue. As units went en-route, the police reported a working fire at the scene, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire) before the first fire company arrived. In addition to units from Northbrook, Glencoe responded with an engine, Northfield with a truck, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52.

Fire was in a second floor bedroom and communicated into the attic before venting through the roof. A Box Alarm was requested for additional companies to cover the three Northbrook stations. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene. The fire was contained within 25 minutes. The residents, who were home when the fire broke out, all evacuated safely.

Several images of the apparatus were submitted by Larry, and we expect to see shots showing the fire from Tim, since he arrived right behind the Northbrook companies.

Wilmette dive box 8-27-11

updated 9:30PM

The Wilmette Fire Department received a call before 6PM this evening about a swimmer in Lake Michigan who was caught in the heavy currents and disappeared new Gillson Park. When the fire department arrived, they requested divers from throughout Division 3 plus the Coast Guard and a helicopter from the Chicago FIre Department. The helicopter was initially unavailable as Chicago had a rescue of their own in progress. The helicopter was able to make one pass over the area before returning to Midway Airport to refuel.

The water was deemed to choppy for divers, so firefighters walked the breakwater and into the surf looking for signs of the swimmer. Evanston responded with their jet skis which enabled divers to venture into the lake. The swimmer’s body was spotted by firefighters walking the beach after more than an hour on-scene, and the jet skis were used to bring the swimmer’s body to shore.

Tim Olk and Jeff Rudolph were on the scene and photographed the operation.

Jeff Rudolph provided the following description:

At the Wilmette Code 4 and dive box at Gillson Park today, a 15 year old male was pulled under by a strong current. Conditions where too severe to put divers under the water, so instead they did walking patterns using pike poles to locate the victim. After 1.5 hrs, the victim was spotted in the surf break by a spotter on shore. The victim was pulled out unresponsive. ALS care was started on the beach and the patient was transported up to Wilmette Ambulance 27. Medics from Wilmette, Deerfield, and Skokie worked on the victim and transported him to Evanston Hospital where he was pronounced. The waverunners used belong to the Evanston FD. Chicago FD Air 1 assisted with an overhead look, but the churned up water was to murkey to see anything.

Several storm related fires

Lighting from the recent heavy thunderstorm activity was blamed for several area suburban fires. Glencoe, Deerfield, Mt. Prospect, Elgin, and Naperville all had fires during the overnight storms. Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune articles describe the fires.

Two house fires, in Glencoe and Deerfield, early Saturday morning appeared to be caused by lightning strikes from the heavy thunderstorms that passed through the Chicago area Saturday morning, and a third blaze at a Mt. Prospect apartment complex could also be lightning-related.

The Glencoe home in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue was a “total loss” …

…  a Saturday morning fire that forced a Deerfield family from its home and resulted in one firefighter being hospitalized. The injured firefighter suffered chest pains and was taken to Highland Park Hospital and was in good condition … The Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District got a call about 2:01 a.m., arrived at the scene about three minutes later and had the fire out soon thereafter.

The Mt. Prospect fire, which drew firefighters from 16 different departments, was at the Colonial Green apartments, a 39-unit structure at 2024 W. Algonquin Road. The fire destroyed the attic and part of the third floor, (Mt. Prospect Fire Chief John) Malcolm said. All 75 of the building’s occupants got out of the building ..

Lightning also struck the steeple at Vineyard Christian Church, 200 Division St., in Elgin, Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Elgin Fire Department.

A lightning strike spawned by a severe thunderstorm started a fire that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a Naperville home but injured no one …

The compete articles can be found HERE and HERE which cover these fires in more detail.
