No one was injured in a July 24 fire that heavily damaged Spandico LLC Exteriors’ building at 350 Duane St. in Glen Ellyn. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, said Craig Eldridge, spokesman for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company.
Glen Ellyn firefighters were called to the fire at 7:28 p.m. and stayed at the scene until 10 p.m. Several neighboring departments also responded to the fire.

Glen Ellyn trustees plan to increase monthly fire service fees to pay for operational costs and to establish a reserve fund for building projects at the village’s two stations.
Trustees expressed initial support Monday night for the higher rates for five categories of property owners. The fee for homeowners would increase from $7.50 to $15 a month. The charge for businesses of less than 20,000 square feet would double to $16 a month.
With the raises, the village expects the new fees would generate about $1.6 million annually for the fire company, an anomaly in the suburb that leaves firefighting to about 60 volunteers who are each paid $1 a year. The company also stands to receive $151,500 this year from two special taxing districts.
The extra revenue would allow the village to set aside nearly $750,000 annually in a fund that could help pay for the possible replacement of the downtown fire station in the next decade and improvements at the Taft Avenue station.
The board could commission a space study into both village-owned buildings later this year and get the findings in 2018. Station No. 1 at Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue is the older one and opened in the 1950s.
Financial planners also have recommended allocating about $400,000 annually for equipment costs. One decision on the horizon later this spring is whether to buy a new ladder truck.
The fees now yield a total of about $803,000 annually for the fire company. Operations alone are expected to cost roughly $700,000 this year.
The village imposed the fees almost three years ago to replace a long-running donation program for the fire company. Only about 20 percent of property owners were contributing to the program.
Initial revenue projections at the time showed the village collecting roughly $70,000 in fees from property owners in an area largely east of I-355 and north of Roosevelt Road. But those owners already pay property taxes to a paper fire protection district that contracts out fire service to the Village of Lombard.
Glen Ellyn officials caught the error before sending out the first bills.
The board could vote on the proposed increases as early as March 20. The higher fire service fees would tentatively show up on water bills in June.

Longtime Glen Ellyn Fire Chief Stu Stone is being remembered for his love of Glen Ellyn. He died Feb. 4 after a prolonged illness. He was 74.
Stone also was the former publisher of the Glen Ellyn News, now the Glen Ellyn Suburban Life. He became publisher after the death of his father and continued in that role until the paper was sold in 1999.
In recognition of his many contributions to the village, Stone was named as the grand marshal of the 2016 Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Parade. Those contributions included playing Santa Claus every year as part of the annual Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce Holiday Walk.
Over the years, Stone received many honors, including being named the Glen Ellyn chamber’s Man of the Year and Glen Ellyn Jaycees’ Citizen of the Year and Fireman of the Year. The chamber gave Stone the Chamber Man of the Year Award in 1977 and made him a lifetime board director.
Stone joined the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company when he was 21 years old and served as chief from 1978 to 2001, following in the footsteps of his dad. He was a member of the fire company for 53 years.
Company Capt. Bill Miller, a 35-year veteran of the department, said he is thankful for Stone’s leadership. He also knew Stone through being an employee of the Glen Ellyn News for 22 years.
Stone also had a love for Glen Ellyn, he said. “That stood out working for him,” Miller said. “He belonged to so many different organizations. He also enjoyed cooking steaks for organizations. I was part of a group with him called Stu’s Crew.”

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company on Feb. 4 announced the death of former Chief Stu Stone after a prolonged illness.
He joined the fire company at the age of 21 on July 12, 1963, and served for more than 53 years until his death Feb. 4, according to a news release from the company.
Stone was elected chief of the fire company in April 1978, and he remained in that position until April 2001. Since then, he remained involved in all aspects of the fire company, offering the guidance and wisdom gained from his more than 50 years in the fire service.
Stone also was the former publisher of the Glen Ellyn News, now the Glen Ellyn Suburban Life.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 9 and 3 to 9 p.m. Feb. 10 at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. Funeral service will be Feb. 11, time and place pending.

Former Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company Capt. James Pierce Jr. had a passion for firefighting.
“He just loved to fight fires,” said Fire Chief Jim Bodony, who had worked alongside Pierce for 20 years. “He gave it his all.” He liked the challenges that came with being a firefighter, Bodony said.
Pierce died March 26 at the age of 77. He had worked for the fire company for almost 28 years – from 1960 to 1976, and then from 1980 to 1992.
A memorial gathering for Pierce will be from 4 to 8 p.m. April 1 at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. April 2 at Leonard Memorial Home, with interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty in it, and I think that’s what draws a lot of people to this profession,” Bodony said. “It’s a challenge, and it tests you physically and mentally to go into some place that’s unknown. You really can’t see when you go into a burning building. The smoke is down to the floor, and you have to go in there and find a fire or find a victim and bring them out and put the fire out.”
Pierce retired from the fire company in 1992 as a captain. Bodony first joined the company in 1972.
He was a quiet leader,” Bodony said. “He was very dedicated to the guys that he supervised.”
Pierce also worked for the Schaumburg Fire Department from 1971 to 1980.
“He was very proud of both departments and also of his service to his country as a United States Marine,” Bodony said. “He was especially proud of that.”
