2-Alarm house fire in South Barrington, 8-11-22

Barrington and Countryside firefighters were dispatched almost simultaneously for two reported house fires this afternoon (8/11/22). Companies were sent to both addresses, one on Penny Drive that was unfounded and the other at 4 McGlashen Drive in South Barrington where arriving police officers reported heavy fire in the garage after neighbors reported hearing an explosion.  The Code 3 was upgraded upon arrival to a Code 4 Working Fire, and then a MABAS Box Alarm was requested as companies went defensive. A 2nd alarm was requested a few minutes later.

Firefighters made a good stop on the fire containing it mostly to the garage and kitchen areas that were involved on arrival. The large home is situated in a gated community without hydrants, and a tanker shuttle brought water for the fire attack. Twelve tankers were used including two from Barrington Countryside, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Round Lake, Bartlett, Nunda, Libertyville, Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, Huntley, and McHenry Township.

Trucks at the scene were from Hoffman Estates and Palatine, squads from Cary and Schaumburg, plus engines from Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Carpentersville, Algonquin, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Lincolnshire, and Lake Zurich in addition to three from Barrington Countryside. Ambulances were from Barrington, Mount Prospect, and Des Plaines.

The Barrington Countryside FPD responded to a house fire early this morning (5/3/18) at 83 Paganica Drive in Barrington Hills. A header was visible as units were en route and they found heavy fire from the second floor and mansard roof upon arrival. The resident had evacuated the house. The area is without hydrants.  The first engine and tanker pulled into the driveway with 4,000 gallons of water as the second engine dropped a line to the end of the street to initiate a drafting operation from three portable tanks. Fourteen tankers shuttled water for over two hours to supply several hand lines that were operating. The house sustained heavy damage and the fire’s origin is believed to be a lightning strike.

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Lightning may be to blame for a fire that tore through a nearly 9,000-square-foot Barrington Hills home after violent storms pushed through the region early Thursday morning. Firefighters from the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District and about 20 other departments spent roughly two hours getting the fire on Paganica Drive under control.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom during the night, before firefighters well called to the scene at about 4:40 a.m., when the homeowner spotted flames. While most of the damage occurred to the roof, the house was left uninhabitable by the fire.

Because the neighborhood has no fire hydrants, firefighters set up a rural fire operation which involved bringing water to the scene in tenders. At no time was water supply lost, according to the fire district.

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

A large house that was being expanded was a total loss Tuesday morning, after an immense fire in west suburban Barrington, while the family was overseas on vacation. An addition being built onto the 3,800-square-foot home appeared to be about 2,000 square feet.

By the time neighbors saw the fire, it had already grown quite large.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at a home at the end of a quarter-mile driveway on Cuba Road between Old Barrington Road and Route 59. A total of 30 suburban fire departments were called to the scene with more than 100 firefighters.
