2 local fire departments get 9/11 artifacts

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that The North Maine Fire Protection District and the Des Plaines Fire Department will both receive steel from the World Trade Center buildings recovered after the 9/11 attacks.

Two northwest suburban fire departments are receiving pieces of the World Trade Center that they expect to use in monuments marking the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and in memorial services marking the 10th anniversary of the attacks this year. The Des Plaines Fire Department will receive a 33-inch steel I-beam weighing 114 pounds, while the North Maine Fire Protection District, which covers parts of unincorporated Cook County, is getting a six-foot long, four-inch wide piece of steel that weighs 50 pounds and is described as a bent plate.

North Maine will most likely keep the item in its box until the next Maine Township board meeting where it will be opened in public. Ultimately, they’d like to incorporate the plate into a Sept. 11 monument inside Ridgewood Cemetery, which holds an annual service to honor the deceased from the historic day.

Des Plaines fire officials said they will meet with the mayor and city manager to decide where the piece should go ,but it might be made into a memorial outside of city hall where a Sept. 11 ceremony is held every year.

Six people were injured this afternoon including two Chicago EMTs when Chicago Ambulance 89 was involved in a collision with an SUV at 74th and Morgan. Both vehicles had extensive damage and the occupant of the SUV had to be extricated from the vehicle.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, but all six people were taken to area hospitals, officials said. Most of the victims were alert and talking to medical personnel at the scene, fire department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The basic life support ambulance carried five people when it collided with a vehicle in the 7400 block of Morgan Street about 2 p.m., Langford said. The ambulance had its lights and siren on at the time of the crash, he added.

One EMT drove the ambulance, while another was in the rear with a patient and two relatives, Langford said. He didn’t know what the patient’s malady was.

The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE with a scene photo.

Tim Olk was on the scene after the patients were removed and submitted several images. More images can be seen HERE.

2 Chicago firefighters die after building collapse – update

The Chicago Tribune has a story about the origin of the fire at 1744 E 75th Street this week of  which the subsequent building collapse resulted in injuries for multiple firefighters and two deaths. The story explains that the fire was started ‘by wood or rubbish that was lit on fire.’

The findings appear to bolster the theory held by investigators that someone seeking shelter in the back of the former laundry accidentally started the fire.
