Chicago Fire Department history – 1964

This from Steve Redick:

February 23, 1964. A great article with some very famous names. It may be hard to read but if you enlarge each page you should be able to read all of it. Classic Chicago Fire Department …
Louis Galante and my dad were very close in those years. They taught classes together and many a time I would come home from school and they would be “pulling ceiling” in our bar downstairs. That was a great time to be in and around the CFD. This was too good not to share

Historic fire in Waukegan, 3-18-75

This from Brian Murphy:

This story from the March 18, 1975 edition of the Waukegan News-Sun involves multiple fires occurring in an apartment complex which was located across the street from the old downtown central Waukegan Fire Station. The cause of the fire was a failure of a component in the building’s gas distribution service, which resulted in multiple fires breaking out simultaneously throughout the building.  Rescues were made by Waukegan’s Hi-Ranger Snorkel and their mid-50’s-vintage Seagrave tillered, 85′,  3-section aerial ladder truck. Photos were taken by News-Sun photographer Don Martin. I would imagine the guys who responded are all long-since retired!  Enjoy!

Of interest … West Suburban Firemen’s Association

This from Brian Murphy:

“This scan is from a September 1974 Chicago Suburban Tribune pictorial highlighting an LPG fire training event at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton. It was sponsored by the old West Suburban Fireman’s Association.  If you look closely, you’ll see guys from Batavia, Wheaton and Villa Park.  If anyone recognizes someone, feel free to share.  Enjoy!”

Vintage 5-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-84

This from Steve Redick:

6/1/84 5-11 Southport Lumber. I was in the office for this one but very frustrated because I was assigned as EMS dispatcher for this job and couldn’t get in on the action. I remember Art Benker, who I believe may have been the Senior that day or perhaps the testing operator getting a call from one of the chiefs on the scene who said “if this gets into the rainbow ice rink I’m gonna pull another 5-11 on that!” I don’t believe the fire communicated. Note the photographer is the mom of Captain Frank Bertog of Squad 7. Also there was another 2-11 at the same time at Cermak and Wentworth.
