Working fire in Chicago, 4-17-14

This from Steve Redick:

I was able to attend an unusual incident last night. There is a small area that belongs to Chicago, that lies along Foster ave west of River rd, adjacent to O’Hare Field. This is much closer to Rosemont and Schiller Park, yet it belongs to CFD. It isn’t really a good run for either the airport companies nor engine 11. Sort of a no-man’s land. Rosemont responded to smoke in the area, as well as Schiller Park , Desplaines, and Park Ridge. CFD was notified as well. Arriving units found a well-involved tour/party type bus inside an industrial building. Park Ridge, due on auto-aide, used a deck gun to hit the bulk of the fire. Chicago companies arrived and worked in concert with all the suburban units. Another interesting aspect to this was that MVU (924) was used. This rig lives at O’Hare Field and most of us fire fan types have never actually had a chance to see the unit in operation. I also took a photo or two of the various municipality street signs at each end of the block. They used suburban style hydrants, but I think I heard the sprinkler connections on the fire building were Chicago threads. All in all a “once in a billion years” kinda deal.

Wheeling brush fire 3-31-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

It’s that season again … RED Center received several calls late Monday morning about brush fires in Wheeling near the Union Pacific railroad tracks from 444 Carpenter all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, they fielded calls for additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Buffalo Grove companies were also handling fires near the tracks as far north as Route 22.

The railroad stopped all trains from passing through and had another train that had recently gone through the area stop for inspection.

All fires were out within a period of about 90 minutes. Here are some images from the largest of the fires. This was behind 250 Carpenter Street, south of Dundee Road.

Chicago working fire 3-22-14

This from Eric Haak:

At approximately 1045 hrs on Saturday, companies in Chicago’s 23rd Battalion were dispatched to the report of a fire in an apartment building on the 7900 Block of South St. Lawrence in the Southside Chatham neighborhood.  Engine 122 was first in and reported light smoke from the 3rd floor.  The apartment’s resident was standing outside and reported that the fire was in a back bedroom.  Smoke was very minimal at the front of the building but once in the rear, it was obvious there was a decent working fire.  Companies got water on the fire pretty quick and the incident was brought under control within minutes.

Fatal fire in Naperville, 3-20-14

The Naperville Sun has an article about a fatal fire in Naperville on Thursday night:

Cariene Jones, 39, was killed when a fire broke out late Thursday night in the three-story building at 108 Douglas Ave.

Tenants of other apartments who found themselves displaced by the blaze spent much of Friday moving their belongings to cars and vans, while members of a restoration and cleaning crew went about their business inside the building. T
Chief Deputy DuPage County Coroner Charlie Dastych formally confirmed Jones had died in the fire. “The investigation is still pending” into the cause of Jones’ death, Dastych said earlyFriday afternoon. “Preliminarily, there are no indications of suspicious circumstances” in the case, he said.
Naperville Fire Department investigators are continuing to seek the source and cause of the blaze, which broke out about 11:33 p.m. Thursday.  Bureau Chief Kevin Lyne said firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes of receiving the initial 911 call. Other residents reported the presence of fire and smoke in the building, Lyne said early Friday in a release.
While searching the building, firefighters found an “unconscious and unresponsive victim” in one of the second-floor apartments, Lyne said. Paramedics took that person, now identified as Jones, to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where Lyne said efforts to revive her proved unsuccessful. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 10 minutes of their arrival, Lyne said. The building’s second and third floors and attic suffered fire, smoke and water damage that Lyne estimated at $100,000.

thanks Andy

Crystal Lake house fire 3-22-14

This from Tyler Tobolt:

Crystal Lake Box Alarm on box #5-342 for the house fire at 62 Barberry Drive. Engine 344 arrived with a small single-story home with heavy fire showing from the C Side.  Engine 344 dropped a 2 1/2. Tower 381 backed down to set up and McHenry Engine 44 supplied water to them from the hydrant down the street. Multiple lines were dropped and operating . Defensive attack on the fire due to a collapse in the roof and small explosions.
