This from Steve Redick:
I took in a pin in accident Saturday morning (5/7/16) on the EB JFK@Sayre. Tragically the outcome of this was one fatality. I was able to get some good images of much of the extrication and the overall scene with apparatus placement. I have never really seen the battery operated spreaders and tools in operation before. It seems like they used two sets of the spreaders and a sawzall. Despite this being a tragic incident I feel that the training potential of some of these images is worth sharing.Steve

All of the Trucks were equipped with Hurst Tools since late 2003. The Squads however have larger Hurst Tools and have more extrication equipment then the Trucks do. One of the items that the Trucks don’t carry are airlifting bags. On some fire departments at least some of the Trucks are also equipped with the airbags. In New York City and Los Angeles all of the Trucks are equipped with Hydraulic spreaders and cutters as well as airbags. In Milwaukee the last that I had heard was that about 6 or 7 Trucks were designated as “Extrication Trucks” and they carry a complete extrication set which includes airlifting bags, speaders, cutters, sawsalls and struts.
Squad 7 did respond at least as far as Harlem on the Norhwest side and did at one time respond as far east as Nagle on the far northwest side in the 11th Battalion. I don’t know whether that is still true however as there have been several running district changes over the last several years. Another example of some Squad running district changes on the north side is that originally Squad 2 used to respond to the Lakefront and the far north side and the Lakefront however for several years now Squad 1 covers the entire Lakefront on the Northside and in fact their district goes as far as the Evanston /Chicago border east of Ashland avenue. I’m sure that the reason that Squad 1 responds east of Ashland on the north and far north sides is because it was figured that Squad 1 could get onto Lake Shore Drive and get there sooner then Squad 2 would.
In my opinion it would make sense if the CFD would equip at least some of the Truck companies with air lifting bags so in case they might be needed they wouldn’t always have to wait for the Squad to arrive as the Squads have much larger running districts (the best example is Squad 5 which responds as far as 138th street on the far southeast side and in other places they respond as far at 130th street or the Calumet river). If the Squad is already on another run the wait for the next closest Squad would be even longer. It would make sense if there were some Trucks that were designated as extrication or “rescue support” Trucks which would carry airbags and some equipment that the Trucks normally don’t carry. That would come in handy if they were running short on Squads. In New York City 25 of their Truck (Ladder) companies are designated “Special Operations Support” companies and that’s despite the fact that all of New York City’s Trucks have airbags and New York City runs with 5 full Rescue Companies and 7 Pumper/Squads. In New York City even the Police run with Rescue Squads that respond to “pin in’s” and are called Emergency Service Units and have 40 to 50 of them. I’m not saying that the Chicago Police should run with Emergency Service Units however as that is redundant and New York has been running with ESU units since the 1930’s. They are actually a Swat team/Rescue Squad and they do alot of non fire related rescue work which was good when New York CIty had an extremely high fire rate during the 1960’s and 70’s.

Is it common to see squad 7 outside the airport? Are the squads the only ones that carry the hurst edrolic cutters and spreaders?
