There has been a thread with several comments lately about the current status of Engine 23’s previous rig, the 2000 American LaFrance Eagle engine which is in the spare fleet. We learned from several readers that the pump had been removed and replaced with a large compartment to enable this to be run as a spare squad piece. Jack Connors found this reserve squad unit recently running as the second piece for Squad 5 and he was able to grab a few shots of it when they were on a run. He submitted the shots so that all could see just what the unit looks like. This carries shop #D572.
Tim Olk also ran across this rig at a 2-11 Alarm fire at 118th and Yale.

Brandan, you have no idea what you’re talking about. First, Chicago doesn’t call firehouses “station __” . Just because a certain Squad has/is using a certain spare rig for some time does not mean it’s their rig. Squad 1 does exist, just because their frontline or assigned piece of apparatus is oos (out of service) doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Please check your facts before making statements.

Squad 1 still exists. They’re running this as a spare while theirs gets fixed as the primary reserve squad is now the quasi permanent Squad 5, whose Pierce has significant damage and last I heard was back at Pierce for eval.

This unit may be a reserve squad unit but it rests at station 42 and goes out on calls with squad 1a so technically now the CFD has made this squad 1 this reserve unit takes the place of squad 1 which i can recall does not exist anymore so this reserve unit is squad 1 now even though it does not say on the truck

The new Engine 23 is I believe a 2010 Crimson pumper. The same as Engines 5, 14, and 65.

Corrections to the information for the spare squad currently being used by Squad 5.

The pump, and Tank were removed. A tranverse compartment was installed where the pump was located and the area of the hose bed and tank has become an open floor area with the saws, extrication tools and such to be stored.
