2-Alarm house fire in Harvey, 1-22-15

Harvey firefighters went to a 2nd Alarm for a house fire at 192 E. 157th Street yesterday afternoon (1/22/15). Images from Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk.

From Josh Boyajian:

Yesterday we took in Harvey’s Fire @ 192 e. 157th st. We were coming from Merrionette Park so it took us a little bit. When we got there, Harvey was on the first floor working but still had heavy fire showing from the 2nd. Crews had a hard time getting a knock on the fire due to the construction of the house, but kept it from spreading to the adjacent house to the east. Here are some of my pictures.

CFD Still & Box – 3/1/2014

This from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

Engine Co. 115 arrived at 12021 S. Eggleston and found a basment fire in a 2-story brick apartment building. Batt. 22 called for the Still & Box alarm because the fire had quickly extended to the 2nd floor. Hydrants in the area might have been frozen as there was a delay in getting a positive water source. Truck Co. 27 set up in the 1/4 sector with their main to the roof. The fire was handled by the companies with approx. 4-5 handlines.
Also of interest is while the companies were inside the building, a neighbor decided he didn’t want to wait any longer and he had to leave. He drove his car over a few hose lines but was quickly blocked in by 6-7 fireman and a cop. Needless to say he didn’t move much more.

4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake, 2-15-14 (part 1)

This is the first in what will be a multi-part posting about Saturday night’s 4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake. Multiple contributors were at the scene.

Massive 4-Alarm fire in Northlake

Prior to receiving multiple cellphone calls, someone knocked on the door of the Leyden Township FPD station at the corner of Mannheim and Grand just before 6PM to report a fire four blocks down the road. Units found heavy smoke pushing from a one-story, commercial structure with a bow-string truss roof. The building was occupied by a tire business and was currently full of tires.

The fire, at 2200 N. Mannheim Road was in the Northlake Fire Protection District. (opposite sides of the intersection belong to either the Leyden Township FPD or the Northlake FPD). The Still Alarm was filled out and a Box Alarm, then a 2nd Alarm were requested within minutes, followed very shortly be the 3rd and 4th Alarms.

The roof collapsed early and sent flames several hundred feet into the air as companies setup elevated master streams from the Leyden quint, trucks from Northlake and Franklin Park, and then the Schiller Park tower ladder.

Here’s the rundown of companies and alarms:

  • Still Alarm: Northlake Engine & truck; Leyden quint; Melrose Park engine
  • Full Still: Bensenville engine; Leyden ambulance; Elmhurst truck
  • Box Alarm: engines from Hillside & Stone Park; Franklin Park truck; Schiller Park tower ladder; ambulances from Bensdenville & Melrose Park
  • 2nd Alarm: engines from Berkely & Elmwood Park; Rosemont tower ladder; Broadview squad
  • 3rd Alarm: engines from Norwood Park & River Grove; Addison tower ladder
  • 4th Alarm: engine from Park Ridge and Villa Park
  • 1st Special Alarm: Interdivisional request for an engine Task Force from Division 3; North Maine, Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview, & Prospect Heights
  • 2nd Special Alarm: Foam Task Force from Chicago Division 9; Battalion 8, Engine 10, Squad 7, Squad 7A, ARFF 6-5-3
  • Also at the scene were: Bellwood bus, Bellwood command post, Bellwood tower ladder, River Grove ambulance, Schiller Park ambulance, MESS Canteen, Salvation Army Canteen, O’Hare Towing,  numerous ESDA units, multiple chief officers

Chicago Heights Box Alarm, 2-11-14

Tim Olk went to south for a commercial fire in Chicago Heights this morning at 1131 Arnold Street.

This from nwi.com:

No one was injured when a fire erupted in a glass factory Tuesday morning at 1131 Arnold St., fire officials said.

Chicago Heights Fire Chief James Angell said firefighters were called around 9 a.m. to the Gerresheimer Glass Co. after a furnace broke and molten glass started spewing out like lava. They immediately poured water on the furnace upon arrival. But on the third floor of the furnace, a steam explosion erupted, blowing the molten glass onto the structure and causing a fire, he said.

Firefighters fought the blaze for about 45 minutes before they were able to put it out. Firefighters remained on scene helping plant personnel restart the furnace so the molten glass would not solidify, he said. The plant, which has been at that location since the 1900s, produces primary glass packaging for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Angell said they called for reinforcements from area departments due to the weather and the size of the factory. He said Matteson, Park Forest, Glenwood, Homewood, Flossmoor, Sauk Village, Frankfort, Steger and Hazel Crest firefighters were on the scene. Crete, Richton Park, Crete Township, University Park and Richton Park Township fire departments handled calls for Chicago Heights.
