The Gary Fire Department operated this 1977 Ward LaFrance pumper. It carried WLF serial # 80-1400. It had a 1500-GPM pump and a 500-gallon tank. It was originally assigned to Engine Company #1. However as with most Gary apparatus it served in many different companies during it’s career. It was also one of only two lime green apparatus operated by the GFD.

Gary Fire Department history

The Gary Fire Department operated these 1979 Ford/E-1 pumpers. They had 1250-GPM pumps and 500-gallon tanks. They carried E-One serial numbers 1361,1362,1363, and 1364. They were assigned to many different companies over their long careers.

Gary Fire Department history

This from Wayne Stuart:

The Gary Fire Department operated this 1942 American La France JOX series aerial ladder. It had a 100′ ladder and a 150-gallon booster tank with serial #L-1866. It was assigned originally to Truck Company 2, later on it was assigned to Truck Company 8, and finally to Truck Company 5. It was disposed of in the early 70’s to a sign contractor.

The Gary Fire Department operated two of these 1966 Mack “C” model pumpers. They had 1,000-GPM pumps and 300-gallon booster tanks. This pumper was assigned to Engine Company 4. It carried Mack serial #C95FD-1524.

The Gary Fire Department operated four 1970 American La France 900 Series engines. They were assigned to Engine Companies 1,2,3&4. They had 1500 GPM pumps and 300 Gallon tanks. Engine Co. No.4 was assigned this apparatus. It carried ALF Serial # 12-1-2321. It had seen a lot of use when this photo was taken in the early 80’s.

1943 ALF model B601CO ALF serial # L-1918.

The Carnegie Illinois Steelworks Corp. plant at the Gary Steel Works operated this 1943 ALF model B601CO. It had a 1000 GPM pump and a 200 gallon tank. It carried ALF serial # L-1918. It was in service there until the mid 60’s.

The Carnegie Illinois Steelworks Corp. plant at the Gary Steel Works operated this 1943 ALF model B601CO. It had a 1000 GPM pump and a 200 gallon tank. It carried ALF serial # L-1918. It was in service there until the mid 60’s.

Gary Fire Department history

This from Wayne Stewart:

The Gary Fire Department operated this 1959 Maxim “S” model pumper Serial #2165 assigned to Engine Co. No.12.   It had a 1,000-gpm pump, a 300-gal. booster tank, and a 100-gal. foam tank. It also carried the following ladders; a 35′, a 24′, a 14′ roof ladder, and 10′ roof ladder. Engine 12 was put in service as a new company in 1959 in a new firehouse.

Gary Fire Department history

The Gary Fire Department operated this 1948 American La France model PJC 710 with a 1000 GPM pump and a 300 Gallon booster tank. It was assigned to Engine Co. 4  at 2346 Broadway until it’s demise in the middle 60’s after a collision with Truck Co. 2 at an intersection responding to a working fire.

This from Wayne Stuart:

Gary, Indiana ran this 1942 American LaFrance  750 GPM/130-GWT, serial # L-1799, model B-575CO from 1948 till the early 70’s. Originally built in 1942  for the U.S. Army Quarter Master Corp, it was assigned to the Illiopolis Ordinance Plant in Illiopolis, Illinois.  On 3/23/48 the Gary Fire Department purchased the pumper from military surplus. It ran first as Eng.2 then as Eng 5. In later years it was used as a spare rig, as seen in the photo running as Eng 12. It was disposed of in the early 70’s.
