CHICAGO (CBS) –A 54-year-old Chicago Fire Department captain died Friday after helping fight a two-alarm blaze in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood.
Herbert Johnson, 54, incurred fatal injuries and another firefighter was injured while battling a fire at 2315 W. 50th Place that began in an attic. A “flashover” may have occurred, fire officials said.
Johnson, 54, was a 33-year veteran of the department. He became a captain over the summer.

“It is my sad duty to announce the line of duty death of a Chicago firefighter,” Langford said.
Chicago firefighter dies from injuries suffered in S. Side blaze

A Chicago firefighter has died from injuries suffered while battling a South Side fire. Two firefighters were injured in the South Side house fire, and witnesses say they saw fellow firefighters performing chest compressions on one of the injured before he was rushed away.

One firefighter from the fire in the 2300 block of West 50th Place was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment and the other was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, both initially in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Department spokeswoman Meg Ahlheim said.
The firefighter at U. of C. died at the U. of C. emergency room after paramedics had to perform CPR on him at the scene, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The victim at U. of C. recently was promoted to captain, Ahlheim said. The one taken to Christ Medical Center was admitted in good condition, she said.
Reports say that the LODD was a captain from the 5h District.
