Blue Island Fire Department history

This from Mike Summa:

For #TBT.  Fire at the Lyric Theater in Blue Island, February 14th, 1960.  Sunday afternoon matinee filled with children watching a movie.  The building was evacuated and the only loss was the building.  Today, this would have been a box alarm with multiple companies attending and change of quarters.  Back then it was handled solely by Blue Island.  How times have changed.  Photos courtesy Blue Island Historical Society.Mike Summa

Chicago Fire Department history, 5-21-68

This from Austin Lawler:

I came a cross this photo on vintagetribune Instagram page. It is of a fire at Chromatic Paint Inc. on May 21, 1968. From the looks of it, it was a massive fire. Curious if anyone on the site has photos or more info on it. Have a good one.

Vintage Chicago fire scene photos

This from Eric Haak:

The first image is showing Engine 48’s house on the far right side with a massive 5-11 fire burning just on the opposite side of the elevated tracks. The second image is a close-up showing what I believe is the first snorkle basket that Bill Post wrote about a couple weeks ago. The fire was a 3-11 on November 2, 1959 at 1109 W. 63rd Street. Kind of a rare image of the Snorkel basket working at an early fire

Vintage Chicago fire scene photos with Snorkels at work

This from Eric Haak:

For this week I thought I would offer a bunch of Snorkel images and one Autocar. Image 1 is from a 2-11 at 4440 W. Madison on September 23, 1959. The building to the right is still there but the rest of it is all gone. Image 2 shows an Autocar working at a 2-11 at 4615 S. Wells on October 5, 1959. This was during the pre-Dan Ryan days and Wentworth Avenue can be seen in the background. Image 3 is interesting because this fire was just outside of Engine 48’s quarters at 3950 S Dearborn. It was a 5-11 on October 11, 1959. For those who are familiar with Engine 16’s old house on Dearborn (same house), you can see the bottom of the railroad bridge at the top of the image, so this was literally right outside of 48’s apron. Image 4 is from a 3-11 at 4314 S Cottage Grove on February 8, 1961 showing Snorkels 1 and 2 working together. Image 5 again shows Snorkels 2 and 3 working together at a 4-11 bowling alley fire on March 27, 1961. The address was 3818 W 26th St. Finally there is an image of a 4-11 from August 17, 1967. This building was on the northeast corner of Wentworth and Cullerton and was the International Heater Company supply warehouse. Happy Thanksgiving to all!”

Vintage 5-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 3-25-66

This from Eric Haak:

These images come to you from the early morning hours of March 25, 1966. This was a 5-11 +1 special at 3951 South Canal Street. The building was owned at the time by the Siegmund Warner Company which produced some sort of sporting goods. The interesting thing is that the larger building that you see the fire building attched to still exists and has been vacant for a while. The 5th image shows a collapse in progress. The 6th image is taken looking north towards Pershing and both of the buildings in the background still stand. The last photo is looking west towards Normal Avenue. Still time is recorded as 0451. Hope you enjoy!
