And looking at the list, there’s a lot of dead weight money in there…lots of Executive Assistants, Commanders and District Chiefs at big salaries. Doing WHAT, exactly?

Santiago had 5 people he had to reward. THAT’S why the City reinstated the District Chiefs at $175K apiece. And why do they have 2 Battalion Chiefs 10 block apart? Why 2 ALS ambulances in one house? These are questions of the CFD universe that can never be answered, because the logic behind them will make no sense. Like most everything else.

I still don’t understand why they brought back the 8 hour district chiefs. It made more sense to me the way it was before that by having a north side Asst Deputy Commissioner and another for the shout side. What’s wrong with having the three deputy district chiefs run each district?
Going back to the divisions (before their name was changed to districts) there were three Second Deputies who were 217 at Engine 5, 218 at Engine 8, and 219 at Engine 14. 218 covered the south side Divisions 4, 5, and 7, 217 covered downtown and the west side Divisions 1 and 2, and 219 covered the north side Divisions 3 and 6. The Second Deputies also worked 24 hour shifts and that was when there were a lot more extra alarm fires. There was also 216 the 1st Deputy out of Engine 1’s house who covered the entire city on 3-11 alarms. To have an 8 hour district chief in charge of each district instead of having one of the Deputy District Chiefs in charge just seems redundant.
It also seems redundant that as of last year there are two district chiefs that are both located on the west side instead of having two located on the south side which happens to be much larger. Then several of the battalions got renumbered because it was decided to move the district headquarters. I wonder if the people who decided to do that for the brass were the ones who decided to start getting rid of the black roofed buggies and perhaps the green lights as well.
And yes the buggies roofs and even the green lights don’t put out fires but does having an 8 hour district chief in charge of each district put out fires any quicker? Why not ask the people and the firefighters if they would rather save money on the green lights and black roofs or if they would rather save some money on the expensive brass.

I agree. They could get rid of some designations if anything. For example, When are we going to hear the Mayor? Yeah, “4-3-1 to Main, give me Box”. That’ll be the day, when you hear Rahm ask for “Still & Box Alarm”.

I have no problem with little Timmy having to look it up. It’s when the deputy commissioners have to do it that I have a problem. Do you really believe they all memorized all those 5 – – and 6- – special unit designations? Do they need to designate 4-7-0 in case the governor wants to strike out a still and box some day?

Tradition…. history. something the new generation of Firefighters are lacking. Why make it easier so little Timmy can not have to figure out who 2-2-1 is without having to look it up…Its so much easier to call it deputy chief 1.

Isn’t time to drop the lengthy three digit “sounder” designations that only slow down and confuse radio traffic? Why not something like the FDNY, who use Car 1, Car 2, Car 3 etc. for the top brass. Why not Field Chief 1, 2, 3, etc. Chaplain 1, 2, etc. District Chief 1, 2, etc.?
The joker stand ain’t making a comeback. Time to move on.
