Tim – If the operator stand is only 18″ wide and the preconnects are incorporated into the pump panel somehow on a top mount pump, I can see how you’re only adding 18″ to the OAL.
If you look at the OAL, these particular Joliet pumpers are approximately 40″ longer than the side mount pumpers.
A pretty standard pump panel is 48″ wide. On these Joliet top mount pumpers, the pump panel is 50″ wide so this is mute. It’s only 2″ difference.
The operator stand on this Joliet pumper is 23″ wide and the preconnects are 17″ wide.
The cramp angle on E-One is pretty tight but the turn radius on this rig will still be considered moderate.
I’m not knocking Joliet’s decision to go with a top mount pump panel. I think they’ll love it.

It’s a misnomer that top mount pumps add “feet” to the wheel base of a pumper. Usually a top mount adds an additional 18 inches, depending on the spec. In this spec, you get a long wheel base because of the pre connects not being incorporated with the pump panel and the compartment at the back of the cab. This is a similar layout to Orland’s 2009 Spartan Darleys. Their Spartans had a tight cramp angle and they actually handle better and turned tighter than shorter apparatus.

From the fireground standpoint, I like top mount pumps but I really don’t like the added length. I guess whatever works for them but I think I’d prefer the shorter wheelbase.

Cool that the city is investing in the Fire Dept. and I love the cab design, but the top mount pump controls add over three feet to the wheel base which is as long ans a ladder truck. These must be going to co.s that respond to interstate highways or more open suburban style meighborhoods. I like all but the length.

I don’t know for sure, but my guess is E3 and E5, as both are approaching 20 years.
