Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-4-20 (more)

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

A Chicago firefighter was injured during a rescue of a resident from a blaze on the South Side Saturday. The firefighter was being treated at University of Chicago Medical Center and is in serious to critical condition. A witness said he appeared to be overcome by smoke while entering the home.  Firefighters on the scene indicated he should be OK.

Three people, including a woman rescued from the second floor of the home, were sent to Jackson Park hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be serious.

The fire happened on the first floor of the home in the 8700 block of South Constance Avenue in the Calumet Heights neighborhood around 12:30 p.m. Fire department officials say the firefighter was injured trying to save an elderly woman trapped on the second floor.

The cause of the fire, which was extinguished about an hour, is not known at this time.

Fatal fire in Maywood, 1-5-20

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Maywood firefighters received multiple calls about a fire at a residence in the 100 block of 9th Ave. Sunday around 1:55 a.m. As they battled flames on the ground floor of the home, they discovered a man and a woman who were unconscious. Both victims were transported to Loyola University Medical Center, but despite doctors’ best efforts, 54-year-old Cedric Brown did not survive. His girlfriend remains hospitalized in critical condition, suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Brown was a father of two.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to get the blaze under control, which investigators said appears to have begun in the front room of the first floor a little before 2 a.m. No other injuries were reported. Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. Officials said there were no working smoke detectors in the first floor apartment.

5-Alarm fire in Genoa City, WI – 1-5-20

This from Eric Haak:

The Bloomfield-Genoa City Fire Department in Wisconsin had a 5-Alarm fire in an apartment building Sunday morning (1/5). The call initially came in at 9:00 reporting a first floor apartment’s living room was on fire. First-in units reported the apartment was fully involved and soon after they reported explosions. It looked like the second floor apartment collapsed into the first and fire was through the roof. These pictures were taken over an hour after the original call.
