Retirement, Promotion, and Appointment Ceremony
On Thursday, January 3 the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District conducted ceremonies for BC Alan Grzeslo, BC Kelly Cossman, LT Kevin Hedman, and FF Will Thomson. These members spent a great deal of their personal time off-duty attending educational programs that prepared them to succeed in a very competitive testing process. Retiring BC Grzeslo performed an inspection of the members, was presented with a ceremonial axe commemorating his service and an American Flag that was flown over Station 9 that day in his honor. Al then offered some personal remarks reflecting on his 26 years of service with the PHFD. BC Cossman and LT Hedman took the oath of office and were presented with their badges and helmets. Each had their wife pin their new badge on. Will Thomson took the oath of office and was presented with his badge that was pinned on by his father. The event was well attended by PHFD members, trustees, and commissioners as well as several members of other FDs and RED Center, many of our police officers, and the family and friends of those retiring, being promoted, and appointed.

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
The Aurora Fire Department will honor the lives of three firefighters who died fighting a fire at a Woolworth store 85 years ago. Thirty-seven-year-old Capt. Herbert Reiss, 48-year-old Capt. John Petersohn and 35-year-old firefighter Charles Hoffman died when an exterior wall collapsed on them as they fought the large fire at the Woolworth 5 & 10 store.
An honor guard will mark the anniversary by placing a wreath at the site of the Jan. 11, 1934 fire that was the most destructive blaze in Aurora history.
